For maximum damage go with kensai dualed to thief. If you are going solo go with berserker dualed to thief. Both dualed at level 9.

the best backstabber I have seen is the assassin (has the X7 backstab) with the ce. fury and the two rings of invis. great big damage and THAC0 is no problem.

Yeah, that's all good, but how can set "hide in shadows" >100, if there is no such skill, I mean you can't set it in create charecter menu;may be -"Move silently"?

he he please don't make the same error that I did

"hide in shadows" is there just use the arrow to go down in the box there you will also find detect illusion and set traps skills.
I found out the first time when i had 300 in move silently

_--thanx--_
What do ya think about:half-orc,figh-thief,str-19 dex-18,Hide-150,katana+++ or longSword+++ and single weapon stlye+++
Will he be powerfull?

And why do you think that Assain has x7 backstab?

Just make sure your "move silently" is not too low, or you won't stay hidden for long enough to sneak up on your enemy.
I think he will be strong on the fighter side, but he won't get any thief bonuses for being a half-orc.

I know how you feel. I did the same thing but with the weapon profiencies. Imagien my mighty archer without profiencies in bows...

Because at higher levels, the assassin does get 7x backstab damage. It just wasn't documented. I've played an elven assassin in a prior game and am currently playing a halfling assassin for the racial thieving bonuses. There are plenty of strength-enhancing girdles that I'm not worried about the lower strength.

For maximum backstab damage go for a kensai and dual at level 13. Have GM in quarter staff and buy a staff of striking( 1d6+9 damage). With kai on you'll do insane damage.
Of course that staff has limited charges but still.

Can you backstab with the staff of striking!? Kensai 13/Thief 17? (>15) is decifinitely the way to go to max out your backstab damage. On a crit hit backstab with Kai and Celestia Fury you will always do 274 damage.

Yes you can backstab with the staff of striking and it does more damage than CF.

What you could also do, to test the highest possible backstab, is to hack (with ShadowKeeper) a Fighter / Assassin. Create the char. at the appropriate level to get the 7x backstab multiplier. Then, because you've got that fighter qualification, use a strength potion to boost STR to 25.
Or, a simple Assassin, of high enough level for the 7x, as long as you don't go to Spellhold before this test- this way, you could just use Draw Upon Holy Might. No idea what level you get the 7x at, but it's probably at least level 20+, which would give you a giant boost in STR from DUHM.
Of course, I'm posting from work, so there's no way for me to test this. Any takers? KensaiRyu, you reading this?

Unfortunately strength bonus damage is not counted in your backstabdamage like it was in bg1. Here it is just added at the end of the equation I believe.

Right, but the Kensai bonus is added before the multiplier. Hence, the Kensai/Thief can actually hit for more in a backstab than an Assassin. At least, that's what my tests showed.

You have to remember that only humans can duell-class. So if you start of with a half-orc you will be very disapointed when you're gonna duell-class and you can't.

my stalker is a good backstaber, he is on level 12 and usually i do about 60 of backstab damage, but i think for a instant-kill backstab the best is kensai/thief
