Many methods work

There are a lot of ways to kill Mindflayers. Summoned fodder often works as you've found out. Also Chaotic Cpmmand spells will protect your front line tanks from their spells (though they can still be INT drained in melee fights - and if INT goes to 0 your char is dead). Thief traps work well as do Invisible Stalkers and Mordikain Swords. Luring them out one or two at a time and then overwhelming them often works also. Some higher level area effect spells can be quiet devasting (Storm of Vengence comes to mind). Do a forum search on this topic and you will get a ton of ideas.

Simulacrum and Mislead for strong fodder and ranged weapons.

Good suggestions! Not tried the fodder route but will give it a go now I've restarted the game again.

Invisibility is pretty useful against mind flayers.

Again, my boy Minsc with Choatic Commands, Improved Invisibility and a few potions of Genius (finally, a use for them!) can whack 'em good while the rest of us put our feet up.

I was stuck there for a while too. Used Anomen with as many summon skeletons (at his level they were Skeleton Warriors -90% Magic Resistant). The hard part was getting close enough to see for them. I backed up Anomen with Aerie's skeletons

SPOILER

Do you have the Mind Control Circlets too? Use one on a Mind Flayer (not the other guys) and he can open your doors you need opened - and he draws attention from his own people :D

The other good use for Potions of Genius is to boost a mage's INT so they can learn more spells than they normally could. If you try to have a mage memorize a spell and get the message that they have memorized the maximum number of spells for that level the PoG will allow them to surpass that limit. Save up all the spells that the mage should be able to memorize but can't due to the limitations and when you have enough have the mage down the PoG and learn them all at once. This is great for lower level mages especially if you are soloing or playing a very small party.

I think either bruce, or kovi and some others and i discussed this extensively long before tactics mod came out...

and before i found out just how much fun g deathblow is... :p :p :p

summon up skeleton warriors, haste them, and this is crucial, mass invisibility them...

int drain will kill skellys...but the ac bonus and attack bonuses of mass invisibility will make them 2-4 times tougher and more effective...

4 skeletons, mindflayer lair is clear. :D :D :D

now tactics mod is different...

fighter mages rule, especially with prepared spell trigger loaded up with sunfires when things get dicey, or your protection from magic weapons runs out...

chaotic commands, improved haste, free action...cast protection from magic weapons before you head in...when there is a lot more of them than you can kill, unleash spell trigger of sunfires on self, and run back to prepared corridor where you set some traps... ;) ;) ;)

Invisible stalkers and Mordenkainen's Swords are immune to mind control and psionic stun. Send them in first and pick away with your archers.
