Forgotten Realm Books

I grew up reading Tolkien, Robert Jordan, and Terry Brooks, but I've never read a forgotten realms book. Where's a good place to start and who is worth reading. The reason I ask is that often times series books are more about making money than good (albeit light) literature. I've wasted countless hours reading sub-standard Star Wars books and would prefer to avoid the formulaic drivel whose sole purpose is cashing in on the D&D's marketing juggernaut.

A couple of months ago I was in the same position as you were....now I've read quite a few "Forgotten Realms" books.....and overall they are good especially the ones written by R.A Salvatore.....
I started off with the books about Drizzt Do'Urden.....twelve books in all so far.....I think....written by R.A Salvatore
-Dark elf trilogy
-Icewind Dale trilogy
-Legacy of the Drow (four books)
-Spine of the world
-Servant of the Shard
There's also the Time of Troubles books - The Avatar Trilogy...written by Richard Awlinson
-Shadowdale
-Tantras
-Waterdeep
That should get you off to a good start.....and of course there is always the Baldur's Gate Novelization and the Baldur's Gate 2 SOA novelization.......theese two books are written by Peter Athans......

@K: Long time no see, man... Heard you were talking soccer over at the SYM (not really my subject so I left you guys alone). Good to see you back in business again!
@Orion: Also check out Salvatore's books about Cadderly (a cleric with a monk girlfriend) as well as the books of Elaine Cunningham.

Ummmm....
Why not start with the dragonlance trilogy??
I read it a long long time ago and liked it a lot then. Dunno if I would like it if I were picking it up for the first time today.

@Saumerez-
I think he's looking for Forgotten Realms books, not Krynn.
I certainly enjoyed the "core" 6 Dragonlance books back when I read them.
