are you guys tired of all the kids with their new words like 'homies' or 'sup'? Or even instead of saying 'are' they say 'r' and so on... I'm only a kid too, but i'm tired of it... I can't understand what the heck anyone is saying anymore.

well- "homies" and "sup" I doubt can be classified as "new", but the usage of "r" instead of are are likely a biproduct of the chat/SMS-language that is being used in the morden day communication between people in such a media.

I rememeber when chatting some years back, we used loads of abriviations, to type faster (luckily - I didn't have that problem seeing as I type pretty fast ), but I can see if kids chat a lot they might start using these words more in every day life.

Also especially with SMS-language now.

It is rather annoying yes.

Nah, I don't mind it. I use slang words all the time, but then again I also love to throw big and complex words into discussions. I try not to abbreviate words though, its an etiquette thing that I've learned from SYM.

Same here. Slang is fine but abbreviating words in l33t fashion just makes it look like you can't spell and it annoys the hell out of me. Abbreviating words like are (as "r") and you (as "u") is just fricking lazy. They're three letter words for God's sake!

If people want to use slang, I'm fine with it, as I can generally understand, and even speak it for the most part. But, there is a difference when you use it in a formal area, or just with friends. SYM, I think, has become more formal, and there is the etiquette thing.

I agree with Kayless (Ooh, I haven't typed your name for quite long time! ) and others here.

Also, don't forget about the half of population in GameBanshee forums are non native English speakers. They are trying hard in this English forum already to understand Ameri.... err, other members' occasional mistakes in spelling.

YES!

I think slang words and alternative spelling of words are both part of the natural "evolution" all languages go through. Words change in meaning, disappear and new words are invented - it has always been like this. I see no reason to resist it - cultures evolve and language is part of the culture.

That does however not mean that I personally like all abbreviations and slang words. And here at SYM, like Minerva points out, we are many people who do not have English as our mother toungue.

I wasn't talking about people that havent fully learned english yet... I was talking about teens that come from english speaking countries that are just plain lazy.

Heh, when you learn a language as your second or third language I suppose you never "fully" learn it...but still, I am not against the use of slang and abbreviations, as I said I think it just reflects cultural changes. What I think of those cultural changes is another issue, though - all of them are certainly not for the better.

Language is not only a means for communication with other people, our language also affects how we create our concepts of the world and interprets events and experiences. In that sense, a poor language (poor in the sense of few words and small ability to differentiate and distinguish) will not only affect a persons ability to conceptualise but also affect perception. Language is part of our cognitive network, and as such it will affect a whole domain of cognitive abilites. However, the problem is not slang and abbreviations as I see it - you could use a million slang words + 80% of the words in Oxfords dictionary. The problem is that that the average American only use 1000 words in their everyday language, and the average Brit uses 2000 words. Of course the passive vocabulary (words you know and recognise) is always much larger than the active vocabulary, but people also tend to maintain and reinforce what they actually use. So poor language in the form of lack of ability to use nuanced concepts is IMO the problem, not the use of slang per se.
