Casting familiars and exporting is a little bit cheap if you ask me. besides, any character can do that if you know the potion/scroll replacement "trick".
I prefer a well-built Assassin which has the nice poison weapon ability and can make a 7x backstab hit at higher levels. The Use any Item HLA should make him very powerful when he casts scrolls of improved invisibility or mislead. Until he can choose that HLA he of course has to make use of potions and rings of invisibility.
The dagger of the Star is also a very nice weapon for this since it can grant free invisibility after your backstab kicked in. Of course you are required to set him up with proper amounts of THAC0 modifiers for his backstab, but that shouldn't be too much of a problem.
When you are not backstabbing you are going to coat your weapon in poison and shoot arrows or bolts.... Using Gesen Bow for instance with normal arrows or enchanted arrows (depends on the foe protections) or maybe with a Tuigan bow you can do quite some damage. Spellcasters are not much of a problem anymore when the poison kicks in and if you chose to backstab spellcasters with it... even better.
The weapon of choice can be anything.
As mentioned, the dagger of the star is very useful, but low on damage. There are a bunch of long swords, katanas and short swords that do much more damage and are equally useful.

Depends on whom I plan to take, though I like:
Human fighter dual to Mage (I like using short bow and long sword)
Elven fighter/thief (to cover the lack of good thief)
Half-elven mage/cleric I imported from BG1
Dwarven cleric/thief (to cover the lack of good thief and the lack of quieter clerics in the game
)

My favorite class...? Simply this: a wild mage. And you accept whatever variables occur in his or her casting, without returning to a previous saved game, ever. It's fun, it's challenging, and it's always different everytime you play.

I've seen funny things with the wild mage in several romances. One of the wild surges had just turned me into a woman when Viconia invited me for some night-time fun.
Fantasies, fantasies... what went on that night...

!!!
I have never played anything else than a pure mage, no specialists because I like to able to know every single spell. Why even risk to get your clothes bloody in a mele when you blast anything out of existance from afar.

well im getting close to finishing this game for the first time so my only choise really for favourite class is the ranger kit Archer. No real problems with it except not being able to hurt a few creatures but thats what i have other team mates for. They do the hacking and i pick off the strays.

Too bad Tiax can't join you for very long. He is still the best evil NPC I've ever shared time with...

Mine would have to be the Paladin because: of Carsomyer; he can be a party all on his lonesome when something wipes out the rest of your party; his immunities; his spell ability; the fact that being a lawful good then turning into the slayer is ironic. Also the fact that if your alignment isn't right you can become very humble very quickly.

First, greetings to everyone!
Then, to relate to the topic, my favorite class is definitely the Mage - in all shapes and sizes. Pure mage, specialist, wild mage. Second is the Sorcerer, sacrificing versatility for power. Even in PnP they're my favorite classes...

MY Fave..
Shadowknight
However, if we restrict it to orthodox D&D classes per BGII, I'd have to say Fighter/Cleric multiclass for fun, Sorceror for pure destructive power. Every class (except, maybe, single class druids and the Ranger beastlord kit) has its merits, and so
de gustibus non disputandum est.
NB for them as don't know, Shadowknight is a mandatory evil plate-armor wearing melee class, with moderate arcane spellcasting abilities (from Everquest).
Good gaming!

An ARcheR all the way!!
I always take him along, made my own equipment for him and now know exactly how to take opponents out with him.
The only downside is his weakness against magic, but he can overcome that...
So my vote will go to an ARcheR (but I guess that wasnt a suprise to some
)

Honestly, folks, my favorite class/kit has to be the Cavalier. It's not as much about Carsomyr, but because of the immunity to fear and poison making me worry more about less common (and more dangerous) status ailments, such as level drain, petrification (an issue, but not SEVERE, due to a Paladin's saving throws), and status draining. My Cavalier's not invincible, but he's also not apt to be susceptible to everything thrown at him. That's cool in my book.
Other interesting classes/kits (to me) include, Archers, Wild Mages (I might really try that one time in the future), Gnome Illusionists (either vanilla or multi-classed to thief or cleric), and Skalds.

actually am very fond of fighter mage multi...
quite powerful, and lots of fun...
better, imho than fighter cleric, because the fighter cleric is limited in weapons selection, and a fighter mage is better at killing magic using enemies...

I totally agree with fable, playing a wildmage without reloads for bad effects is one of the most fun characters to play.
But i also have some very good swashbuckler experiences
