Hi: I have played morrowind some time ago but never got to the end. I have just started a new game and this time when I went to get code book from Sotild in South Wall (which I never had trouble getting from her before) she absolutely refuses to give it to me no matter how high my speech is She tells me that I mush choose which side I want to be on. Has someone put in a patch in later games that makes this change
All helpful replies will be much appreciated.

if you are a member of the thieves guild as well as the fighters guild, then she doesn't want to give you the book. I think I got around it before by getting kicked out of the theives guild for some reason like stealing from a member, getting the book from her, then getting reinstated into the guild afterwards. Otherwise, the game itself leaves an out....

There is a quest later on in the theives guild that will result in you not being given this particualr quest by the fighters guild. If you have a save before you took the quest, you can just lay off the fighter's guild quests until you get to that point.

In the walkthrough by Steve he had this tip...

Taunt her until she attacks you, then kill her and take the book. When you do this you will be booted from the Thieves Guild. To rejoin the Thieves Guild you must pay 1000 gold.


Yeah, you have to pay 1000 gold, but it's another option.

just kill her, get the book to the fire eye and then pay gold

Best options IMO are to get the book from her by admiration. This has to be done before you join the Thieves Guild. If you have high enough Personality and Speechcraft she will just give you the book. Once you have the book you can then join the Thieves Guild. This way you don't have to kill her. Or you can just skip the quest. Percius Mercius in Ald Ruhn tells you that you shouldn't hurt Soltilde - this is an evil quest by the corrupt Fighters Guild as the code book belongs to the Commona Tong. Or you can pickpocket her for the book if you have already joined the Thieves. ust train up high in Sneak and lift it from her. So you have two ways to get the book peacefully or you can just skip the quest entirely by doing other Fighter's Guild quests and ignoring this one. Killing her should be your least desireable and last option.

Actually, no you can't. Getting the code book shuts you out of the thieves' guild.

Well, I've done this my last 3 or 4 games and have never been shut out of the thieves guild. The only time I was shut out of the thieves guild was my first game where I taunted Sotilde into a fight and killed her for the book.

Well I never joined the theives guild before. Thats why I kill her instead of stealing from her

No need to kill her to get the code book if you are a member of the Thieves Guild. Just put off getting the code book until you have your sneak skill built up then sneak up behind her and pick her pocket for the book.

I just picked her pocket for it, and im in the thieves guild. Just dont get caught and u want have to worry

Is there anything else you can do with the code book? I mean it's a code book, it has to break the code for something. I remember after getting the book from her she says something like "Fine you can have it, it won't help you anyways" so I began to wonder what it's for.

one other possible way to do it-- telvanni bug musk. No stealing or killing or paying theives guilds involved. But then again, sometimes the best part of the game is stealing and killing.
