Simple question about "hide in shadow"

Hi,
I can't hide in shadow if I am in the view of an enemy, no matter how many points I have in that skill, right?

Correct. But you can run out of his line of sight and rehide.

ok, another question. If I am in invisible mode, like being cast an invisible spell by a mage, can I hide in shadow if I am in the sight of an enemy? (It's for backstabbing purpose.)

thnx.

i believe being invisible enables you to backstab so you wont need to hide...but then you appear straight away

but if I use the Staff of Magi for invisibility I can't switch to other weapons to backstab without losing invisibility. That's why I asked if I could hide in shadow while I'm in invisible mode(granted by the Staff of Magi).

Yes, that should work. But I think switching weapons will dispell your hide in shadows, so you will have to go into invenory to make the switch. I seem to remember trying this trick with the Staff of Magi and it was more trouble than it was worth.

If you are using the SoM with a Mage/Thief, a better way is to cast the spell Mislead out of sight of the enemy. This makes a nearly undispellable invisibility which allows multiple backstabs. This is considered cheese by most people, so I don't know if you go in for that sort of thing. You can find out more about this tactic in UserUnfriendly's guide to cheese (search this forum for the thread). If you are using to SoM with a Thief that has the Use Any Item ability from ToB, this trick won't work, unless you want to cast mislead from scrolls.

Can't you backstab with the Staff of the Magi?

nope because staff of the magi is not flagged as a thief weapond at the infinity engine you can use near infinity to change it because thiefs should be able to backstab with staffs only because the staff of the magi has great magic in it you can't use it to backstab?I don't agree with it it's a design thing.....

No, it is a Mage-only weapon so it is not normally usable by thieves. Even if a thief finds a way to use it, it gives a message that it can't be used to backstab.

Of course, you still do normal damage if you hit and if you swap the weapon you can turn invisible again immediately. So you can effectively avoid getting hit while attacking your opponent. This is actually more effective than backstabbing over the long term, but it doesn't have that same one-hit thrill.

EDIT: Oops, FilipeTeles jumped in ahead of me.

Heheheh.............you can hit and go invisible too but versus some enemies like beholder when you go visible their spoell come very fast so you don't have time to go invisible hit...

Damn! The reason I posted this thread was because I was thinking about making a fighter, getting all the proficiency points for the katana, then dual to thief for its "use any item" and backstab abilities so I could use the Staff of Magi to get invisible, then hide in shadow, then backstab with Celestial Fury.

It probably won't work, but does anyone have a quick way to try out this idea? I don't want to spend so much time getting to the high level so I can see if my idea works or not. So, anyone cares to help?

thnx in advance.

Idon't think it will work.

But it's easy to try.
1) Create a F/T multiclass (it'll work the same as dual)
2) use Shadowkeeper to give them, say 3.5 million EXP and summon the two weapons, with the right proficiencies.
3) in game, when they level up, give them UAI and try it out on some of the creatures in Irenicus' dungeon.

Then you'll know

In the adventures mart you can buy how many Air Control rings you want. With them you can cast improved invisibility once per day....buy 10 of them with ring of gaax and the 2 ring of invisibility you can have 14 invisibilitys per day very good for backstab...........

Or you can buy just one and then recharge it in the gem bag :D
What you have to do with the SoM is to go invisible and then run out of sight and hide. Easy to do since they wont follow. It becomes a bit tedious after a while hehe. I know cause I soloed SoA and ToB with a halfling assassin and that was his favourite tactic. The good thing about this tactic is that you can go up and hit them once with SoM if they have stoneskin or images or something, reequip and become invisible, run and hide, come back and stab with another staff or weapon that can be used for backstab. Making SoM usable for backstab just means you don't have to run and hide... but it does IMHO feel a little better to adapt your tactics to the game and not the game to your tactics ;)

you can't recharge in the gem bag....the bag of holding recharge the items but I consider it cheating I prefer to buy 10 of them so I don't feel bad and still can backstab many times......... :D

Things that fit in the gembag can be recharged there. Yeah of course it is cheesy on the edge of cheating but if you buy ten rings you are probalby gonna put them in the gembag and then they will be recharged so you might aswell just buy one and give the rest of the money to beggars and churces :D

I can put them in the gem bag and nothing will happen because the gem bag doesn't recharge the items is the bag of holding.....

Are you sure? I am sure I have recharged rings in the gembag. Maybe ToB fixed that then cause I haven't done it for a while. WIll check tomorrow.
