Fake Soul Gem on desk.....won't advance?

Hey there. I put the fake gem on the enchanters desk in the Mage Guild, and when I go back downstairs to say that I completed my duty, I'm prompted with the same directive of 'Have you put the fake gem on G's desk? Hurry before he returns.' Does the gem have to be on a certain spot on the desk? I put it along with the real soul gems.
I'm also stuck on the Code Book task. She won't give it to me. I don't belong to the thieves guild. What gives?

You have to put the fake soul gem "inside" the desk, and not on the desk as the other soul gems are.
So just click on the desk and it will open and you can put the fake soul gem in there.

I think she will give it to you, if you have a high enough persuassion.
So either try to admire her, or else bribe her.

Only if you aren't a member of Thieves Guild. And, if you get the book this way, you will never be able to join, the same if you kill her. The most harmeless approach is to steal the book unnoticed. It's harder quite a bit, i grant you, altogether no harm to relations with Thieves Guild (you may need them
), no bounty etc.
