Is sorcerer worth the limitations?

Someone posted the statement that "sorcerers suck" in a different thread. I picked this class since although the number of learned spells is low, the number of times spells can be cast is high. In addition, despite the huge number of spells in the game, you normally find a few really usefull ones and rely on them heavily anyway. All you need to do is choose your spells wisely.

Anyone who has played both as a sorcerer and mage care to comment? Maybe I didn't look at every angle and sorcerers do 'suck'.

i love my sorceress...i was thinking just like you did...there are only a few spells that i use a lot, but in a way i think the sorcerer class give syou more variety as well. with a mage you may have to reload after getting killed and memorize different spells and then go in. but with a sorcerer you are always ready with a variety of spells...you just have to think very hard abotu which spells to take...no going back...

I haven't played thrugh the whole game as a mage, but I am nearly finishing it as a sorcerer and I want to say - once more - that the sorcerer class is the best mage, as long as a)you know which spells you will need b)you are getting above lvl 10 c) you have a backup mage with the less used but still usefull spells.

Sorcerers make great PC but not for soloing (it is possible but it would be tiresome)

I really like the sorcerer kit, being the strategist I am, because of the large flexibility the kit offers. It allows you to be prepared for anything that you could expect. Trouble is that what one expects might not be the same as what happens. Image

And I do for some reason find the sorcerers spellsystem more belivable than the ordinary mages. Makes no sence that you should "forget" how to cast a spell repeatedly and have to "memorize" them anew every single day.

I agree with ubik. Someone say that with sorc. you don't get exp. points in memorizing spells, but if you have another mage, you make memorizing all the spells you find and you have the possibility of casting the spells you have not learned. The ability of casting the spells you need in every situation is unvaluable

I played 'em both, and have to say, the sorc is at any rate easier than the mage, IMO, because you start off with more spells, and don't have to look for the good ones...

If only we could dual to a sorcerer... Yes, a sorcerer is very close to a normal mage known from other RPGs. A mage in AD&D is a parody to a mage because of memorizing spells again and again - and finding out again and again that we need different spells. The only reason why I do not use a sorcerer is his extra low number of HP and his inability to fight (limit base thac0 = 15). I am a fighter who relies on defensive magic rather than on offensive one.

If you have no grasp of what spells a mage requires then yes they suck!

If you have no grasp of what spells are important to you then do not play a sorcerer. Sorcerers do not suck.

I really don't care one way or t'other.

But sorcerers *do* suck IMHO. Image

They're worse than mages, and you don't get xp for mamorising spells.

Oh, GREAT! Let's all start listening to Grunt! "Okay, everyone, line up. We're going to be rationing out mages today. Limit one per party. No Crowding, back there!"

Sorcerors Rule! Great flexibility and you miss out on the small amount of XPs from memorizing scrolls. Big deal, in the long run.

Even better:

The inquisitors have decided to round up all spellcaster and chop their legs off.

All 'return legs to body' scrolls shall be burned.

Just stoking the fires of controversy...

Small xp's? 3 level 7 spells and you may as well have killed a lich.

Be honest with me. Would you rather read a scroll or kill a lich?

Okay, then. Quit reading those wimpy scrolls and become a sorceror lover like the rest of us.

nice way of thinking Gruntboy.
you are properly one of them if asked what you would like the most to have: lots of money, lots af might or total domination you would pick lots of money!
Why?
"Gruntboy": with lots of money I can buy might and with lots of might I can get total domination.
powersick??
