Questions on Vampirism

I have a friend who said he contracted porphoric hemophilia(vampirism), and then was cured. The thing is, he said that all of his fortified attributes(high strength, agility, etc.) remained the same as when he was still diseased. I have tried to get vampirism, but can't seem to. SO three q's.
1)What, if any, is the easiest way to become a vampire?

2)Can you contract the disease, get cured, and keep the benefits?

3)If the high attributes DONT stay, is it still worthwhile to try and become a vampire?(Do the goods outnumber the bads)

first off, im not to sure how to get vampism, id kinda like to know myself, however i do know that getting vampism is supposed to rock. I mean besides the fact that you can only travel at night and everyone in the world hates you, i think its a good trade off for some kickin high attributes.

You get vampirism by either being attacked by a vampire or in rare cases looting their dead bodies. Pretty much the same way you catch blight or common diseases. Once you have the disease it takes three days for it to manifest itself. During those three days you can get rid of it by drinking a simple cure disease potion. You will have nightmares for those three nights if you decide to let it take affect on you. Once you have it you will be instantly recognized as being a vampire by anyone you talk to - and trying to find anyone who will talk to you can be a chore (normally only mage guild and Telvanni will even give you the time of day - they are fascinated by vampirism). You will also take damage to your health from sunlight - a couple of points per second, so you can only travel safely between sundown and sun rise (some people make CE healing items to counter this problem). Also you will not be able to travel by boat, silt strider or guild guides. You will have to hoof it anywhere you need to go. You will not be able to buy or sell thing either except to other vampires in your clan.

There are a lot of common unaffliated vampire lairs in the game and there are three great vampire clans. Its probably not worth the effort to become a non-affiliated vampire. These guys are usally in old tombs (there's one due west of Ald Ruhn that I like to raid for vampire dust - and they regenerate over time). One of the three greater clans you will be directed to if you join the Temple and do all the quests for the Molag Mar temple. The other two you will have to find on your own and are pretty well hidden. One is on an island south of Sanctus Shrine and NE of Valenvaryon.. This is a pretty good clan to join. Just go in and let a vampire attack you, healing as necessary but don't fight back. Its okay to use hand to hand on them but stop before you do any serious damage. Once you get the message that you've contracted porphoric hemophilia go outside and rest for three days/nights until you get the message that you're a vampire. Now go back in and talk to the various vamps and find their leader. The leader will give you various quests to do. The third vampire clan in is a dwemer ruin SW of Urshilaku Camp (you can see two dwemer ruins on the game map in the mountains - one of them is the vampire lair). Different clans will give you different bonuses to your various stats. Once you're cured they go away. The three clans hate each other and if you visit another clan they will attack you on sight. There are some vampire quests that are not clan related. To find them you will need to talk to the Tevanni and especially the people in the mage guilds.

I won't tell you how to get cured as that is fun to figure out for yourself. I will only say that you should find and read three books. I think the names of the books are something like Vampires of Vvardenfell Volumes 1 and 2 (Volume 2 has more important clues and is much harder to find). The last book is a journal written by a bouyant arminger who found the cure. I know of only two copies of this journal and both are very well hidden (Highlight to read hint): (the most I will tell you is that one is somewhere in a Red Mountain citidel and the other in a secret Vivic library - not the main library). This Journal gives very detailed instructions on being cured.

Thanks for info, but are you supposed to keep having the dreams each time you sleep after you become a vampire? because i AM a vamp now, but the weird dreams keep happening each time i sleep......and..............
To join a vamp clan, do you have to be "bitten" by a vap in the clan, or can you join once you're already infected?

You have to bitten by a vamp of that clan.

You can indeed be cured of being a vamp, but it takes a lot of time and effort.
I'm told that you can finish the game (= the main plot) as a vampire, but it's very difficult because of your inability to talk to most npc's.

another way to get Vampirism

well, obviously I had this major problem earlier, by getting the vampirism and the corprus at the same time, which wasn't easy...anyway, the next time I played Morrowind, I figured it all out...

I can't remember the name of the cave or the place where I were, but it was on the second main quest, where you have to kill Dagoth Ur....
Anyway, I found these beasts in Red Mountain as well, while doing in a simple quest, and you can also find some all around ghostgate, especially higher up.... in any case - these 'things' look like a troll, but they have huuuge masks and tentacles sticking out of their faces. They don't notice you easily, unless you stand in front of them. What happens if you meet one?

first it casts magic at you.... anti-resistant to fire or something - down to only 50%.... then if you haven't killed it by then, it will turn you into a vampire....with magic! go figure... anyway, I could never understand WHY or HOW I had turned into a vampire, because there were no human/vampires in that cave...and then I actually stumbled upon one in Red Mountain and voila!
Second try went much better :)

ok...let's see then :) The little island north of Gnaar Mok. That's the cave you encounter in the second test on the main quest...so - if you want vampirism..try yourself in that cave :)

IIRC the dreams persist the whole time you are a vampire. You can NOT join a clan if you were bitten by a non-clan vampire. Seems the clan vampires don't like the clanless vampires. Nor do I think you can get cured and then contract vampirism again from another group. Pretty sure its a one shot deal. There are still a couple of non-clan vampire quests you can do (I know of one for one of the mages in the Vivic mage guild and another for one of the Redoran families (the son wants to become a vampire). Neither are very exciting. In fact being a vampire isn't very much fun IMO. You can either reload an earlier game and try finding one of the clans or put it off for the next game. I wouldn't want to try becoming a vampire until I knew how to cure it first.

Personally I think the game is long enough and way to easy to worry about doing the rather disappointing vampire quests and getting vampire stat perks. I think doing the Illuminated Order mod quests are way more interesting and you can even become a lich and disguise your lichness when you're out and about.

Sorry but it appears you have some major confusion. There are creatures called Ash Vampires that work for Dagoth Ur. They are NOT real vampires and you can NOT contract vampirism from them. You certainly did not catch vampirism in the Ilunibi (aka Carcass of the Saint) near Gnaar Mok. You got corprus disease there because the Ash Ghoul curses you with it. He doesn't even need to touch you. Even if you kill him with a bow before he can open his mouth to speak you will get corprus disease from that quest. The difference between real vampires and the so called Ash Vampires is explained to you by reading the two books I mentioned in my first post and by talking to people about it. The creature with the tenacles coming out of his face and casting poison, lightning and other spells at you is called an Ascended Sleeper. They have nothing to do with vampires. They also work for Dagoth Ur and are next in line after the Ash Vampires. All of the Ash Vampires and some of the Ascended Sleepers and Ash Ghouls have personal names (all beginning with Dagoth).

SPOILER: As far as I know there is only one vampire on all of Red Mountain. He is an extremely powerful character who lives a cursed existence in a tomb. One of the deadra gods put a curse on him that serious drained his powers. He wears a full set of ebony armor and will attack you on site if you are not a vampire yourself. He is fairly easy to kill at this point. You may have contracted vampirism from him. If you did you do not belong to any clan. If you are a vampire already he will ask you to do a quest for him to regain his powers. If you do this quest he will be extremely powerful again and attack you as soon as you've finished helping him. But you do gain a neat shield for doing the quest.

Another SPOILER: You can go into Ilunibi cave BEFORE getting the quest. If you do you will NOT run into the Dagoth Gares guy. Search the final shrine area carefully and loot it. The two best guantlets in the whole game are hidden behind some objects. I'll let you find them.

Actually, I'm quite aware of the Ash Vampires....and I wasn't talking about them. I only met one of those I was talking about inside that cave.... and he wasn't a vampire, I can tell you that. And I know I got vampirism from him because I tried it out later again to make sure of it. I suppose it matters which level you are on. The higher the level, the more difficulty.... I swear...I did have vampirism, and I swear this lumpy guy was the one who did it :)

So this "lumpy guy", was he one of Dagoth Ur's ash vampires, an ascended sleeper or a corprus stalker (now they are lumpy)? Did you get the nightmares and sleep three nights before it took affect or was it instantaneous on meeting this mysterious creature? Did you get cured of this mysterious vampirism, or does your character still have it? You state that you "did have vampirism" implying the past tense. So how did you cure it? Just curious.

If you got it in the Ilinubi cavern the only things you meet in there are dreamers, lesser daedra beasts (atronach's, etc.), a couple of skeletons, and finally Dagoth Gares (and he's just a glorified ash ghoul) who gives you the corprus disease.

I think it was one of those Ascended Sleepers... and yes I did have nightmares..but not only at night....every single time I slept....so I had to use potions instead. I never got cured... I luckily had a quicksave from right before I took the quest, and started there :) people wouldn't talk to me because I was a vampire...
So I retook the quest, and made sure to avoid the ascended Sleepers.... Other times when its magic has hit me, I get vampirism, but when I kill it it dissapears again...other times it just stays...maybe it's just a glitch in the game. When I did get vampirism, I didn't notice until after I killed Dagoth ....something :) and I got corprus as well...what a dilemma :)
Nope, in the third quest cave, where Dagoth Gares is...there is ONE Ascended Sleeper.... I've met him everytime.... :)

IIRC you can get contaminated by a vampire, but if you take a 'cure disease' potion before three days have gone by, you won't be a vampire.

with the vampire embrace mod, they work just fine. its the whole daylight part you got to worry about.
