I was playing my new 15th level sorcerer in HOTU over the weekend and I found that by scribing my high level spells to scrolls that I was able to make a great deal of money, relatively quickly. Here's how I did it.

Go to the magic shop in Waterdeep, buy a bunch of paper for scroll making. (I bought about ten)
The scrolls stack up to six, so sit there and cast all of your spells above 5th level and sell all of it. You only have to pay gold and exp on the first page of your scrolls.
Rest in the shop and rinse and repeat.

Now one thing that my sorc did have in his favor is his Appraise score, which is a 7.

I've allready made a few hundred thousand gold pieces with this trick and will keep it up right until I finish chapter one.

Enjoy

Also in the First Campaign you can buy a normal item (I tried it with a Longsword although I'm not sure which item would be the most cost effective.) and cast the Second Level Spell Continual Flame on said item before reselling it for quite a bit of profit.

As a further note, I finished Chapter 1 of hotu with my sorcerer last night and discovered that not only does the genie not sell parchment but neither do the other shops in town. A little bit of a bummer it was, but I did have 300,000 gp so I can't say it was too terribly bad. I also had a small stockpile of parchment so I can make some money. If anyone knows where to lay hands on more, let me know. I've stopped leveling in sorcerer and have started leveling in Red Dragon Disciple.
