this one's weird. from the start menu, my computer locks up if i try to load a game. but if i use start new game i'm fine. i then have to go thru until it's time to get dressed. then i can load one of my saved games. also, if i die in game i'm returned to the start menu so i have to go thru the same routine. i did the update, my computer is buff, and i have no clue. anyone?

When you say buff, what do you mean? How much memory, what video card? Have you stripped out all you can that runs in the background?

ok, i'm actually a computer chowderhead, but the system usually runs great for me.
amd xp3000+ 2.2
1024 ram - 2 nifty 512 chipsets like the ones advertised in cgr
nvidia geforce fx5900 ultra
80 gig hard drive (only 20% used)
viewsonic flatscreen
windows 2000xp pro
just "rescued" bastila and the screen stayed dark thru the next scene until we were back in the hideout. *sigh*
as for programs running in bg, win2000 is new and i have no clue what anything on the list is when i do a ctrl/alt/del. whatever's running, it doesn't affect planetside or baldur's gate.

I'd suggest getting the latest patch, turning off the hardware mouse, and turning off movies. See if that helps.

Maybe you have a corrupt savegame or something, try removing all savegames from the directory, and start a new game, see if it still doesnt work.
If that doesnt work you could try a reinstall, and if that fails I would contact Bioware.

Do you have the latest graphics card drivers from Nvida. Running with less then the newest can cause strange crashes (myself - I couldn't access the character screen at level ups, before updating gfx-drivers)

If your problems persist, make sure to have a look at the official board - there is a sticky there regarding nothing but loading issues...
