No ammo required ranged weapons.
What would be the effect if I would equip ammo on weapons like the GessenBow or Firetooth?

I think they shoot both the fisical and the magical arrows (double damage

).

Um...no
When you equip an arrow/bolt/bullet on a weapon like the gesen bow, the arrow is used instead of the "normal" projectile - so you can use (for example) firetooth to launch Jan's stun bolts, or the Gesen bow with arrows of detonation.

Nephtu's right. If you equip ammo, it "negates" the inherent spell used in the item's crafting. The new ammo replaces the old.

And what kind of bullet's does Everard's sling shoot? (from the bonus merchants) +2? +5?

It shoots +2 damage bullets with a THACO of +5. Means you can hit liches like Kangaxx with it. A +2 bullet does 1D4+3 damage (4 to 7 points damage depending on the roll) with a THACO of +2. So magical +2 bullets in Everard's sling would do the same amount of damage but will be able to hit some creatures that the regular +2 bullets would be ineffective against.

I thought you needed +4 weapons against Kangaxx?

My bad. You are correct, its +4 damage not +4 THACO that's required.

However if you use normal arrows in the Gesen Bow they'll still do the electrical damage (useful vs mages with protection from magical weapons & stoneskin: the normal arrows will go through the protection, and the electrical damage will punch through stone skin)

urm...not quite...i think...i actually think you get a double ammo effect...i think every time you fire a bullet with everard or bolt of biting with firetooth, BOTH the fire arrow and the normal arrow are launched...i distinctly recall a mage with spell turning on, reflecting back a flame arrow at minsc...also, i recall killing a troll completely in de'arnise hold, with the sling of everard, the bullet killed it, and the ghost bullet, i think killed the downed form...
can someone have a mage with spell turning be the target of a firetooth with magic bolts??? i don't have the game installed right now...

Yeah if you equip ammo in ranged weapons like gesen or firetooth the damage adds up. Firetooth fire damage is returned by spell turning but not so with the electrical damage from gesen.
Everard ghost bullets are +5. And dont forget, with slings you get strength bonus to damage. You get with bows and arrows of biting aswell. Gesen bow and arrows of biting and strength 24 does insane amount of damage, especially if you are an archer!!

have minsc alternate tulgan shortbow with firetooth...
i usually have hacked minsc into an archer or paladin, and i think of it as having both a light machine gun, with high rate of fire, and heavy machine gun...with much heavier and larger caliber bullets...
i've seen him do 30 points with a bolt of biting or a powerful magic bolts, like +3 bolts...

You cant hit Kangaxx with firetooth equipt with bolds of biting, but you can hit him without bolts. So I think they dont add up.

The damage does add up as well as the thac0. But when you put ammo in one of these weapons the enchantment (which determines what types of creatures it can hit) is taken from the ammo only.

It adds up to insane amounts in ToB. My soloarcher is getting ridiculous criticals of 70+ damage with Gesen, Firetooth and Everard. But then again firegiants have loads of hps so they are well needed.
Not many creatures that still stand after one round of greater whirlwind
A pity power attack isn't save vs spells... would have gone nicely with called shot hehe.
I have to use the precious kuo toa bolts for that.

Just sharing a screenshot. I think I will have to play again with a party with three archers. Ah the power.
Three archers using Gesen firetooth and everard. And then a swashie an undeadhunter and a blade... yeah that could do some damage.
ToB really is all about dishing out damage and not so much about spells as SoA imo.

What do you think is the best weapon for an archer then?

Well that depends on the definition of best. And also on what kind of game you are running. I have from the beginning altered my game so that archers can grandmaster in all missile weapons, not just bows but slings and darts aswell.
Do you have the grandmastery patch installed?
Short bows are a good choice since you find good shortbows evenly spread out through the game.
Long bows are nice since there are many of them, however none as good as Gesen IMO.
Crossbows dish out plenty of damage. Firetooth is available early if you have ToB and will last you the entire game. Same with sling of everard. I feel better using a bow than a crossbow or a sling and the electrical damage from Gesen is nice. You also have an extra attack. I would recommend getting all of them
The big advantage for the sling is that you can use a shield at the same time. Shield of harmony and shield of reflection and shield of balduran are very handy in certain situations.
