Turn undead

Maybe its a stupid question for some, but i havent found out what to do whit the special ability "turn undead" whit my aasimar?
Can someone explain this for me?

cast it when in close proximity level with undead. I dont know the exact statistics, but depending on your level and the undead things level, it could be turned in fear or even destroyed.

you know, my 21st level cleric has never been able to turn undead! even when he's adjacent to them

I'm not sure about thirdedition rules, but in second edition evil clerics could charm undead with turn undead.
I know good clerics can cause them to run away or destroy them in third edition.

Turning undead depends on Charisma. If you have a min-maxed cleric with 3 Charisma then they probably won't even be able to turn a Manchester United supporter, let alone any udead.

my clieric has a 27 charisma, so suffice it to say i am a bit shocked that he cant turn undead
