Bracers of Armor give you an ARMOR bonus of +5 to AC. If you are already wearing armor that has a base ARMOR bonus of +5 or more, then your AC will not go up when wearing the bracers. There are several different bonuses to AC such as ARMOR bonus, DEFLECTION bonus, NATURAL ARMOR bonus, and some others that I can't remember right now. You cannot stack multiple bonuses of the same type (i.e. two different ARMOR bonuses), but you CAN stack bonuses of different types (i.e. an ARMOR bonus and a DEFLECTION bonus). That is probably why your AC didn't go up by 5. Bracers of armor work really well for monks and spellcasters. The bracers don't have a spell failure chance attached, so wizards and sorcerers usually LOVE them.
I hope that helps.
