Speaking of gems, I found a Fire Opal, which has a resale value of zero. Im wondering exactly what it is used for? Anyone know? I think I found it in chapter 2.

I must admit that I have actually no idea. I've found this several times through also, and have found no use for it (yet).
Will try to check up on it.
( Just a piece of advice, place it in a bag or something - because even real Fire Opals will stack with it and then have a resale value of 0gp )

fire opal?
after some further reading, Im wondering if the Fire Opal isnt an item you give to one of the henchmen? I didnt see it listed specifically, but then again, I didnt go to deep into the list of mercenaries, and the items you can give them as you gain levels. Still a possibility though...

It isn't - I have completed all the henchmen quests, but none of them wanted that item.
I've tried to find it in the toolset, but no luck yet.
I think I will just have to play through NwN again to find it

fire opal continued
The fire opal I have has no special abilities with it.
I tried to sell it, but it has a re-sale value of zero.
I examined it, and it just rambles about how precious a gem it is, nothing more.
Maybe its just a worthless item you pick up in the game. Ive noticed there are several things that have absolutely no use whatsover in the game. They are basically just "dead weight" to carry around taking up inventory space. Hmm.....

Each item worth 0gp is a plot item as far as I know. It could however simply be a mis-implementation from the developers.
I don't know however, just grasping at straws here
But if/when I start replaying, I'll try to notice where I pick it up.

I believe when we examined it, it said it created a fire ball, but it didn't explain how!

I picked up the same thing and noticed the 0GP sale value before getting any more - it showed up in the first part of chapter 2. If it IS a plot item, then it should show up at the same time for everybody and not as part of a level-adjusted treasure seed like the Topaz (I was getting these in chapter 1 after starting at 6th level with my sorc).

I've gotten two of them so far, and they seem to be something that has slipped through the cracks of the game. It USED to have a charge of fireball, but no more. It also is a plot item without a plot, since nobody in NWN asks for them, nor are they used in any recipes that I am aware of. Essentially, dead weight.

Where did you get the second? I just recently stopped checking them before stacking and I would hate to think that I just created a stack of USELESS & WORTHLESS Fire Opals.

The real Fire Opals stack with the "0GP version", and as far as I can remember from my runs through the game - I've always only seen 1 of these 0GPs (I usually dump it in a bag when I find out I've got it) - so my bet is it is an ordinary one that have stacked?

to date I have ony found one Fire Opal in the game and that is in chapter 2. To my knowledge it has no value and I was hoping after reading these posts to find one...oh well if anyone gets an idea of what to do with them let me know maybe we should ask a NWN's developer to see what they think.

I have to date still not found any use for the "0 gp" Fire Opals. Although I've tried to check the toolset when I found one. (now I've of course forgotten where I found them .... need to play through chapter 2 again
).
I also think I found two my last run through the game, but I'm not sure - because it has been a little while since I played it.

The most valuable gem
But later on in the game. It didn't have any value until I got to a higher level, then for some reason I noticed it had more value than an emerald or ruby. The odd part was that the older fire opals still had zero value.

Well - Fire Opals *are* worth more if I remember right. However, there are 1 or 2 in the game that for some reason has the "Plot" property, which makes them worth 0 GP.....
And because they stack on top of each other, picking up and placing "real" Fire Opals on top of the ones "marked" as Plot, they all get the value 0. Thus one needs to be careful with them.
I have a few ideas as to why these "plot" Fire Opals are in the game, most likely they are remnants of a cancelled quest, or it is simply an error.
I've found no mention of them in any walkthrough, or any of my numerous replays through this game.

small location spoiler for Fire Opal
Just pulled out an old save game, and the first place I found one of these 0GP Fire Opals (Plot items), was in the very SW corner of the 2nd level of the Creator Ruins in chapter 2.
Unfortunally - I have still not found anything to do with them.....
