I found an interesting article about realism in games, and how it's being focussed on.

Read it and post your comments.

I really like how the article relates to the games I like, I like less realistic games (ie. Planescape Torment (set in a very VERY different world), Lemmings, Worms series, Age of Wonders Shadow Magic, Jazz Jackrabbit, Starcraft, and a helluva lot more.)

Personally, I don't think he's really talking about the realism in games, rather the metaphysical ideals people have regarding our idea of 'realism' and 'reality'. He touches very little on the actual desire/design of games having the realistic touch, and whether or not by playing them, we lose touch with what is real.

It's a very Idealist mind set, much like the Matrix. The comparison he is making, is that as games become more and more realistic, we slip further and further away from reality. If he wanted to discuss our deman of realism in games, he should've taken a different approach, rather then the one of the neuroscience, and perception. If he intended to make the point I see is made, then he did his job well.

But, to surmise, definatly a Metaphysical topic, one of keen interest, personally, and one that is indeed a problem when concerning MMO's, and how deeply people become engaged in them.

Anyway, that's just my take on the article.
