OK, I was convinced that (in the party selection screen) the middle, left picture was supposed to be Calo Nord. It looks like his oddly shaped hat and the barrel of one of his guns.
I figured that I'd just missed him out(like Juhani) on the first run through because I'd selected things like "oh, you think it was luck? Well survive again!" or "Time to die" as opposed to "wait....maybe we can cut a deal".

On my second run through I tried to get him to join me, but we had one line of conversation before the fight started.
I've also searched in the forums and looked at the walkthrough and there's no mention of him joining your team.

So, how do I get Calo to join my team? And if I can't, who is that supposed to be on the character selection screen?

Calo can't join you. Did you allow for Trask?

Trask's spot eventually becomes Bastillas. The spot he is reffering to is HK-47. You can find him on Tatooine but you dont need him.

We don't know at this point whether he's used HK-47 before, or not. Is that whom you were missing, Rem Nac?

Aahh, yes, I'd forgotten about that bot.
The first time I played it through I was dark side by that time so I ignored that bot.

HK-47 is an evil bot, and a good party member for an dark-sider.
To bad you missed him.

As I remember it, I threatened the merchant so he lowered his price to 2000, so I got DS points, but I didnt have that much cash on me.
