What do you think the hardest enemy in the game is?
Firkraag is one, so is Irenicus and Bodhi killed Minsc in three hits. Shangalar (Twisted rune) is hard as well.

I think the Twisted Rune: the only one I couldn't do without "cheating" (looking it up on the net). Irenicus is a ****ycat by comparison.
EDIT: hey look, they censored my ****y. Mrs Slocombe would not be happy

Kangaxx is hard. My party were worn out after the battle with Kangaxx (full body) so Kangaxx (DemiLich) was ****ing hard!

The twisted rune is harder if you mess with them without cheese, or unprepared.

I wouldn't call kangaxx hard. He is either impossible or extremely easy. If you don't protect yourself from imprisonment you can't win and if you will win.
Twisted rune however offers an interesting blend. Personally I find beholders to be the toughest enemies as I never use the cloak or the shield against them.
Giant trolls are a pain aswell... not to mention clay golems.

Hardest...
Obviously it depends on party makeup, levels & gear somewhat, as well as the MODs (Sewer Mindflayers are horrid at level 10-11 ish, cake around 16-17)
Unmodified:
SoA - Twisted Rune
ToB - Balthazar, Demons in Maze level of Watcher's keep
Tactics:
SoA - Ilyich, Kuroisan, Twisted Rune
ToB - Ritual, Improved Abazigal, Ascension
Overall:
Soalaufein mod: Eclipse party
My 2 gold worth..

I'd just change Imp Abazigal to Improved Sendai... She and her drow buddies are just a hell. Unmodified Balthazar was piece of cake to my parties, Amelissan was way harder, but not too much on ToB. BTW, ToB was not really hard at all.

ascention...
i've found ways to cheese everything except ascention.
man, that battle is hard...hard...hard...
the only tactic that's worked is overkill...summon 10-20 planetars, and that's inelegant cheese...or nuke the area with dragon breaths..
also inelegant...

Yeah ascension is really hard. It is tough to get any spells of even, with that improved illasera and her miscast arrows.
That battle is really too difficult, but still a lot of fun.

I would have to vote for Kangaxx - had to ask the Forum for Tips to beat him!!! Twisted Rune was hard, but manageable
(my party was Mage heavy and Anomen and Kel had off the wall Magic Resistance, w/ spells or Holy Avenger)
Kangaxx (the Deni-Lich) shudder I forget HOW many times I had to reload...

Ascension is tough.
Personally, I found the Improved Irenicus in Hell to be the toughest.
Just imagine fighting a dragon, a lich, a Mother Beholder and Irenicus himself.

For once, I found prepping the battle with traps to be of little help.
More than a handful for me. Anyone with tips on this battle, please feel free to enlighten me here.

I have yet to try improved irenicus. Have to get a better computer first
Fighting that yellow dragon from ritual was actually a nightmare.
I dont understand how anyone can defeat that one at around 2 million xp per party member.
All of the improved battles are too hard really. There is really no way of winning unless you know something about their weakness beforehand.
But they are welcome anyway now that you know exactly how to defeat the normal game.

Didnt the map "change", so the traps would be removed?

It also depends a bit on your class.
The fight above the seven vales inn is a tough one, but when you have a druid casting insect plague or something similar, it gets a hell of a lot easier.
I think Twisted Rune is hardest, I lucked out a bit with protection scrolls, but Kangaxx was down because of Carsomyr and traps, did it in one go. Dragons are hard, but usualy I get them in one or two tries.
Twisted Rune offers a lot of hard enemy's for which you can hardly prepare.
Bodhi isn't that hard if you lure away her "guards" one by one and poison the blood before getting her.

put 1 spike where beholder spawns...haw!!!
put 1 spike where wraith spawns...grin!!!
put 1 spike where sword spawns...smile!!!

improved twisted rune???
well, even the improved twisted rune is easy trapping spawn points...and using inc cloud to hurt them...project image will not trigger shangalar...
i found layne with her staff of magi and good script by wes to be a pain...until i used spell triggered sunfire to blast the area where she was, rather than trying to target her with melee or spells...you just need a good idea of where she is, rather than trying to beat her scripting use of staff of magi...

hmm, I would say...
Kangaxx, last boss in TOB, the adventure party in the sewers, not to mention the guardians of the last seal in the watcherskeep and the demigorgon himself.

It depends on your level, of course
The big variable about a lot of fights is when you encounter them, since the majority of quests can be undertaken at any time.
A party stumbling into Kangaax straight out of Chateau Irenicus aren't even going to have time to be embarassed about it, but if fully prepped with Charsomyr, Cloak of Cheese, etc. he can be a doddle. Personally, I wondered why there was all the fuss about the Twisted Rune, but then I've only ever tried it late in SoA when vampires & beholders are about as scary as goblins. By contrast, I found the 7 Vales crew to be almost unbeatable early on and the Sewers party have repeatedly handed me my vital organs on a platter. Some encounters vary according to the party's strength, of course, but many do not.
Dragons always put up a good fight, mind - which is as it should be. I don't know if there's a save against Wing Buffet, but if so my chars never seem to make it!
I think I'd rate Ascension (moded ToB, albeit) as the toughest & best - because it comes right at the end, the designer can safely assume that the party is as good as it's going to get. The varied but complementary threats of the enemies are a real challenge, without being over-the-top - you have beaten these guys before, after all!
Lastly, I think the feral hobbits in the Planar Sphere are worth a mention. Even though I *know* they're really nasty, they still always catch me not-quite well-enough prepared; don't think I've ever beaten them at the first attempt.
B.
P.S. I'm surprised the Cult of the eyeless comes so "soon" - any innocent wanderer into the Temple District gets directed there rightaway. But I generally wouldn't try it till after the Underdark... Of course, maybe I'm just a big wuss!
