crazy batou...?

does Crazy Batou actually play any role in the main quest? it tells me the thread of prophecy is broken when i kill him for the bloodworm helm. i'm pretty sure i've done the main quest with the whole dagoth ur killing thing so does killing him actually matter?
also if i've done the main quest, why do people like Mehra Milo and other important characters tell me that they are worried i havent completed the neravarine prophesies?
