Are Bards good thiefs?

Hey Everybody,

I'm getting ready to go through IWDII a 2nd time. I've never used a Bard but want to give it a try since there were some pretty good Bard items in the game. My only reservation is with thieving skills. I usually get my thief up to about 7-9th level and then change her class to an Enchanter. However, I see that Bard's have some pretty decent magic abilities. Furthermore, when a change my thief into a wizard, she starts as a pretty low and not very useful (as of yet) wizard. Whereas, in the other case, I would have a high level Bard. Can I get by using a Bard as a thief? I mean, will I have any problems picking locks, disabling devices, hide/scouting, improved evasion decoy?

Thanks for the advice!

Hard question, bards can make decent thieves, but they need high intelligence for more skillpoints then.

Why not have you bard focus on lock's and have another character focus on some of the other thieving skills.

Just a personal note from what I noticed, Bards are way better in IceWind Dale 2 than in the first one. It may be the 3rd ed. factor or some such.

i think a bard that starts with one or two rogue levels will have enough skill points to cover one of the two rogue slots, either the scout (hide & move silently) or the qickfinger (search, disable device, open lock, maybe pickpocket). keep in mind that some of these skills are influenced by INT, not DEX. it may be effective to divide the rogue skills between two chars, one DEX-based and one INT based.
