Just stick with the sword. For the rest of your equipment you wnat to consider your teammembers as well.

Apart from the sword, which is the best weapon for a Paladin in SoA and probably for ToB too, for the rest of the equipment you can find better stuff (even in SoA), but as Stilgar pointed out you have to consider the need of the rest of the group as well.

Not if you are playing solo ;)

actually my party has 5 member, I give each one the best I can (plate armor CA 0 Minsc, with flail of ages and defender, dragon shield and dragon helm for Viconia, with a warhammer +2, etc...)

I hope to find (or buy) better items...

the best weapons in the game are the ones you find (or forge after finding several pieces) I am no fan of buying weapons (only in the beginning of the game)

Consider adding the Shield of Balduran, and using it only as needed. That's because it works wonders against beholders; don't use if you prefer figuring out a refined strategy against the nasties.

Well..

The weapons for your paladin are fine. Basically, you want to balance the AC gear between you and Minsc for tanking (somehow, blunt weapons are just right for Minsc) - Regeneration items are very good, too, and will save wear and tear on your priests. So, you're doing dine.

Do you have the infamous rat cloak yet? That's great for tanking nasty melee opponents...

Bernard has a mace uniquely suited to Viconia (well, or Aerie, too, I suppose)

Have fun!

By "rat cloak," I think nephtu's referring to the "Cloak of the Sewers," which can be found in the center of the sewers area in the Temple District.

And by that mace, I think he's referring to "The Mauler's Arm," a +2 mace that grants 18 Strength to the wearer. For chapters 2 and 3, you could have her equip that and drink a potion of fortitude so that she has a good amount of hit points. That way, Viccy could more than likely become somewhat of a tank, as far as Clerics go.

You could also use combinations of rings and amulets to make your magic resistance go up to 100, or even higher. I forget which items you use for the paladin to do that.

On a side note - Get the boots of speed, that's a given. If you have the bonus merchants, get the Helm of Vhailor, Simulacrum on a paladin would help. (or anyone else for that matter)

You can also halp Vicky's con by giving her the Girdle of Fortitude. (She does have low con, right?)

Ding ding ding!

10 points for Galuf! You have correctly identified my (slightly) cryptic names...

I refer to the cloak of the sewers as the rat cloak in honour of what is far and away the most useful form (at least to me).

The mace is great because 18 STR is more than enough for Viccie, and you can train her a point on dual wield, so she can offhand that for the STR effect and swing a real weapon in her main - she already has sick AC and with cleric self buffs, she can put out a serious melee hurting...

Yes, girdle of fortitude is very good for Viconia (or any low CON charecter) - it's even better once you have a bag of holding ;) Viconia is also fairly easily gotten to 100% MR, which makes for some interesting special encounter strategies

for my paladins i like to give them carsomyr for fighting, azuredge for throwing/undead and in my third weapon slot i put daystar. The sunray can be used even if daystar is not equipped. combine this with the helm of vhailor and two rings of the ram, and no undead will be able to defeat you, even kangaxx (vanilla of course). Even one ring of the ram is enough, if you dont like the cheese.

seeing as undead play such a big part i find it very useful to have a great undead fughter, then another fighter who is less focused with their equipment and more a 'jack of all trades' your minsc seems perfect for that part with his flails. If you get the helm of vhailor, you can pass the helm of balduran to minsc to lower his AC further.

Ahem..

Since our friend has VIconia, many undead will not need to be fought at all

"Charmed, I'm sure...."

As you have defeated Firkragg, I suggest building the red dragon armour. If you are using the ring of fire control, you will be immune to fire. Not just good for defense: let your mages go nuts with sunfire around you.

Other good stuff, most of which has already been recommended includes:

-Boots of Speed
-Vhailor's Helm (though I think it may be better for Minsc as a dual wielder or as doubled archer support.)
- Cloak of Balduran (Tactics mod required)
- Gauntlets of Dexterity (depends on your stats)
- Best strength belt you can find (one can just be bought at adventurer mart)
- Ring of Gaxx (remember to use its improved haste)
- 10% magic resistance amulet (forget the exact name)
- Firetooth (probably better option for ranged attacks since you should have enough undead defense with Viconia and daystar)

1) The "best strength belt" in that case, would have to be the Girdle of Hill Giant Strength. Pretty good for the time being.

2) This "10% magic resistance amulet" that you speak of... are you talking about the one you can get in Chpt. 5, or at the end of SoA? If it's the one from Chpt. 5, it's called Kaligun's Amulet. The one at the end of SoA is called the Amulet of the Seldarine, which also gives a +1 bonus to saving throws.

*minor spoilers about where equipment is obtained*

Yes, the Hill Giant belt is the earliest one available. But the Frost Giant Belt can be had in mid-game and possibly kept if Crom Fayer isn't built, and the stone giant belt can be obtained in suldanesselar.

I was thinking of the Kaligan amulet, though there is also the 5%mr amulet from the unseeing eye that can be used in the meantime. With the cloak and possible hell bonus, it is possible to get +100%mr resistance going into tob

And to add another good thing to have: Ring of Free Action - particularly useful to resist stuns, demon gazes.

Not for an Inquisitor that is already immune to hold.

just one note re. the magic resistance equipment:

the holy avenger SETS the MR to 50%, which is not the same as ADDING XX% (like all other MR equipment does - armor, weapons and jewlary). this means that the game will reset the resistance to 50% every time it's loaded, and every time a hit is made, even if your char has rings or amulets that will add up to more than 50%. you can check it in the record sheet.

edit: the only magic resistance that will add up with the swords is natural - i.e. your char has it permanently (there are two places to get it, 10% & 5%)
