If an assassin is equiped with a short sword of backstabbing +3 in his main hand and a shortsword +1 in his off-hand, does the backstab ability still work?

Yes. As long as you're using a weapon(s) usable by single-class thieves, you can backstab (this means no backstabbing with great swords or with the Staff of the Magi, to name a few, since those weapons are restricted from the thief class). When you backstab while dual-wielding, you usually lead with the main hand, but not always.

That's right, dual or single handed fighting is the same for backstabing. Just as long as they're short swords, long swords, clubs, scymithars, katanas or umm... i think that's it. weapons accessible by the thief, like sojourner said

You can also backstab with daggers and staves, if they're thief usable (i.e. Staf of the Ram, etc.)
Backstabbing with clubs......sad, really

Hehe well, backstab is considered like a lethal blow. (rpgwise). So techincaly, a backstab with a club, would be like a big whomp on the head hehe. Or on his testicles lol Definetly lethal damage there
