i have read on here that you can master a certain side than get better abilities, does this mean you need all the powers to master the certain side or is it something else???

It is desided by the alignment of your character - the amount of Darkside or Lightside points you are awarded throughout your playing.
When you make a desicion and it awards your DS or LS points it shifts your alignment. This aligenment is also visible on the character screen by the red/blue bar to the left of your character (iirc).
If the arrow points to the fully blue (lightside) you will see a blue glow behind your character, indicating that he is a Lighside Mastery. Oppersite for darkside - if the arrow indicates full red with the subsequently red glow, he is Darkside mastery.
The arrow indicating the alignement have to be in the top or bottom of the gauge.

Hope this helps a little, otherwise check out the manual, I belive it is mentioned there also.

Read the KotoR FAQ sticky thread for the exact bonuses as well.

Keep in mind that the farther you progress on any meter, the more force points it will take to use powers from the opposite alignment. Meaning if you're neutral, using both light and dark side powers will take the same amount of FP (for comparable levels of powers), but if you're all the way up on the light meter, with luminosity coming out of your rear end, light side force powers will cost much less FPs to use, but dark ones will cost much more.

Look at the screen showing your PC's force skills. It should also list the plus or minus to force ethics, depending on Bioware's bizarre idea of your actions.

Firstly, light/dark mastery were never implemented properly in the Xbox version, so if you're not playing on a PC then just forget about it entirely.
Force mastery has nothing to do with the force powers you choose and everything to do with your actions in game. When the indicator on your alignment meter (the red and blue thing) is all the way to the top or the bottom, then you receive light/dark mastery (respectively). At that time the paperdoll image of your character will either have a column of white light or a black mist behind it, and a little icon will appear in the status effect bar.

That's too bad for you guys. LS Mastery and DS Mastery really enhance game play in my opinion. It's really too bad you X-Box users don't have that....

It's a matter of opinion. It's so easy to beat the game, that when I realized it after my first run-through, I didn't bother with LS or DS mastery the second time around. I also took out parties of two rather than three, to make battles more challenging.

It's not a big deal at all. I usually collect such a motley assortment of different alignment points that I never see the bonuses.
