Assasain having trouble hitting

Right now I am playing an assasain and enjoying it a lot, but of late, I am having trouble hitting people. Now I am at a relatively high level, and my base ThacO is 9, but with all the stuff I've got, my ThacO is 2. That means that on the weaker things I should be hitting all the time. I just got finished getting womped by a gibberling the other day because I couldn't hit it. Not only that, but I missed 3 backstabs on it! I don't know what is wrong. Maybe I am just the most unlucky guy in the world, or maybe my game is screwed up, but I find it really annoying when I have to set traps to kill little things like spiders. However, I only seem to have this trouble with melee weapons. With a bow, everything is fine. In fact, I almost never miss with my bow. Just the melee weapons.

There is a setting in GamePlay options that will show the ToHit rolls. This can be a clue as to what you are rolling so you can tell for sure whether you are just being unlucky or there is actually some problem. It will also show any plusses or minuses that are applied to your ToHit rolls, which might provide further clues.

I can't think of any reason you should be having trouble with melee weapons.

I was wondering. What melee weapon are you using with your Assassin?

Thanks for the tip about the to-hit rolls. Maybe that will give some clue. The melee weapon I was using was the Sword of the Mask +4, and then I switched to Staff of Ryn +4. I have proficencies in both weapon types. O well. I think I have decided to settle for a Fighter dualed to Thief. I will miss the poison though.

Normally in the Baldur's Gate games, you can only use certain types of weapons for backstabbing - daggers, short swords, longswords, and katanas.

Of course, from 3rd Edition D&D, it has been different.

You can backstab with blunt weapons.
