where do i put a new patch when i have downloaded it?

Most of the time patches install themselves, so you shouldn't have to put them anywhere.
Patches (and plug-ins) should be put in
Bethesda Softworks/Morrowind/Data Files.
Then, when you're starting MW again, choose 'Data Files'. Select the patch. Now you're in business!
