best fighters, in descending order.....

saverok/korgan...a tie, both are so good their personality shoud determine choice for you...

keldorn
minsc/anomen
vaygar

korgan is my favorite, he has such a refreshing view on life, savvy is too grim, but his death bringer assault is so cool....

both are really good, with many perks...korgy always seems to make the saving throw and is thus rather resistant to most spell effects...his enrage makes him immune to a lot of the enchant ment family...

if you play tob without playing soa, you want saverok and his awesome death bringer assaults...

if you play soa thru, korgy will outclass saverok in every way by the time you get there...

both are really great fighters and with a little though can be configured for any situation....

mind flayers- ring of free action, helm of charm immune, aegirs hide armor makes you immune to everything except int drain....

dragons- red dragon scale, helm of dragon or helm of defense + protection from elements makes them immune to any dragon's breath attacks, ring of free action makes them immune to stun from wing buffets, and remove fear and you can mow them down like crazy!!!

Keldy is a paladin, so his weps profs are limited, but he also makes just about all his saves, and he has some nice perks...

holy avenger, great wepon, though I am a soul reaver fan, and anyway jan is carrying it...
says it does a nice job on turnips...

dispel magic and true sight are very handy, though dispell magic can remove party protections, you are better off in combat with breach or remove magic

minsc is just completely outclassed by saverok, keldy and korgy.

boo is too cute, tho.

anoweenie is really a cleric, but often used as backup tank.
vaygar is great for backstab but can take care of himslef in a pinch.

the others, jahiera and cernd are really spell casters, tho I always use jaheira as backup tank in my mage heavy paaarty...

If you like boo so much just CLUA him in and ctrl-Q to add him to your party :) If I remember correctly, his claws do 15 damage and he is damn fast

[Some not-so-spoiled spoilers]

Well if we're talking pure ability, Korgan is the f'in man when it comes to kicking ass. As far as I'm concerned he's only surpassed by either your main character or, if you're including ToB, Sarevok.

But the problem is that he's one evil son of a b*tch, so he takes some pampering. He can't be paired up with Keldorn for too long, but Keldorn is the only person other than the possible main character that can use the Carsomyr...it's a tough choice. Plus, I like the "And later I'll split your guts open" comments he makes every now and then.

I hold deep deep deep deep hatred for Minsc, so I'm not even going to put him anywhere in the rankings. Loud ass baffoon popped one of my speakers. His problem is that he's neither a paladin nor is he neutral or evil, so be can't use anything good until way later in the game, and unless you planned ahead, he probably won't have the skills to use it once he gets it. And his stupid ass comments are just plain annoying (awaits retaliation from Minsc fans).

Keldorn and Valygar are both quite impressive in a fight. Valygar isn't as strong as Minsc, but with str belts or gaunts, that doesn't really matter. Yoshimo would be a great dual-class if he didn't have that little problem of dying off for good in the middle of the story. Mazzy can hold her own if you have the right equipment on her and you don't mind all those wasted points in the sling.

If your main character is a good fighter, take Keldorn for the Carsomyr. If your main character is a paladin, then Korgan is definitely the way to go. If he's neither of those (cleric/thief/mage) then you have a tough choice to make, in that situation I would probably take neither Minsc or Korgan and get Keldorn.

Aragon of OC sayith
no really special thing about him, and i'm not even aware of a quest that is minsc specific
Well, He is a Ranger (not a fighter) who can beserk. That's pretty special. Depending on your playing style Minsc is a real asset. I haven't had confirmation but I am convinced that (in Chapter one SOA at the very least) he hits far more and with more criticals than probability allows (and I've done chapter one with Minsc oh well - infinity plus one times.

SPOILER
Minsc (if leading the party) is the only one who can sort out Madeen(sp?) at the top of the Waukeen's Promenade map. While he has no 'quest' he has some of the more interesting NPC interactions.

Yuusuke chimes in with

   !!
LG = CE no problem, ever, trust me...
or have I forgotten myself and stumbled into a powergamer thread - Curdis

Al right, yuusuke, follow the thread to "new evil cheese tactic, will test tomorrow"by yours truely for a way to make minsc half way decent. minsc is sucky, no question, but he can be made decent if he had more spells. so, make sure you have a char who can cast 9th level spell wish. get many potions of insight, have minsc drink, and your mage too, if her wis is below 18. When minsc is at wis 18, according to the book he should have about 6!!!! more priest spells. at any rate he has more spells. so the problem is potion duration is 6 hours, and you need to rest 8 hours to get those extra spells memorized and castable. wrong!!! cast wish, and if you get "make it so the entire party had night of rest you will get those extra spells castable right now!!!

So minsc has more priest spells, at low levels, so what????

If you installed soa without any balderdash patches, 5 armor of faith will make him 127% resistant to blunt, slashing, fire, etc just about all the meelee attacks for a few rounds! Only jaheira can duplicte this as a ncp fighter class!!

For a really nasty fight, you can make minsc invulnerable to any attacks while he goes in and does major damage.

I personally agree, minsc is just a big dufus and needs to be kicked out right away.

I do have to admit curdis is right, minsc does hit more often than anyone.

but really, its really the evil chars in the game who are the best... viccy is best cleric, korgy and the big s are best fighters, edwin is best mage....

being good gets you stiffed!!!!

User, i don't know if high wisdom gives bonus spells to paladins and rangers.

I know for sure that it doesn't in 2nd edition AD&D.

Testings must be made...

I'll donate my $0.02 to the Minsc rant. ;)

His spells suck. Druid spells kick ass, but only at level 4 and up. Minsc never sees those.

His proficiencies are a bit unwieldy at the start. He has points in dual-wield, but no good weapons to go with it. He's obviously destined to carry Lilarcor for the better half of SoA.

His stats are mediocre. Yes, he has good Strength. No, that does not save you a Strength enhancing item for someone else, unless you have like 5 tanks in your party. His Strength is not that good compared to what the items bestow.

He's a warrior, so he'll kick a$$ no matter what. Some people like it simple as in: "You point, I punch!", and Mincs will work for them no problem. ;)

And don't leave out.....His voice! That god-awful voice! You know, I don't know how some people could hate Jan and yet at the same time love Minsc. Jan talks alot, yes, but at least his voice is subtle and the dialogue is more times than most funny and shows work. With Minsc, it's just your classic, "You should think I'm funny cause I sound like a friggin [removed], ahuh huh."

In one of my evil games, I killed that SOB straight off the bat. The only time I've ever used Minsc after Chapter one was my very first time through the game, because I was stupid and didn't know any better. Trust me, though, as soon as I found Korgan, Minsc was on his way to booze-ville at the Copper Coronet.
