hotu expansion question...

Post by lancelot10911 »

I have original neverwinter nights, and just got the HotU expansion. Is it necessary to play the SOu expansion first?? I dont have that one, even though technically it is the next expansion in the line of the neverwinter nights series. Can I jump from original neverwinter straight to HotU without problems, or do I need the leveling from SoU to play...please post fast someone...Im loading it up now LOL.

You don't have to play SoU, but there are a couple of references to it in HotU. Nothing big though. If you are not high enough level, 12-15 I think, you will automatically level up at the beginning of the game. My recommendation is 14; smooth but not too easy. It is very possible to continue with a character you started in NWN original, and then you also get to keep your money.

Have fun playing!

thank you

thanks for the quick reply...i ended original neverwinter nights at level 15+, so I should be good to go in HotU then. Im currently looking at our local stores for the SoU expansion. HotU should keep me busy for awhile till then I imagine. hehee.

There is a small however though.

The prestige classes introduced in SoU will not be availible in HotU withouth SoU. This concers the Arcane Archer, Assassin, Blackguard, Harperscout and the Shadowdancer.

These classes will only be availble to thoese that have SoU installed, because they were implemented in that expansion.

You will still have access to some prestige classes though, thoese that were introduced with HotU.

Futhermore - I'm not sure if the skills and feats introduced in SoU will be availble in HotU withouth the SoU expansion.
From reading the game manual - I'm lead to belive they wont be, but I've not found any place that expressedly states this.

So - withouth advertising to much and not getting money from sales :D - I'd say - if you like NwN and thinks about getting the expansions, then I'd proberly advice you to get SoU installed also, before playing HotU, because of the skills, feats and classoptions you would miss otherwise.

Yes, GOOD POINT Xandax, I just forgot somehow. Hrm. Not that I think the prestige classes in SoU are all the rage, but you might want to check them out. There are also new skills and feats.

But you don't HAVE to play SoU. It is a good campaign however, the best so far, imo. Interesting ideas and not all dungeon monster bashing. Suddenly I don't make it as easy for you, sorry.

In the end it's up tp you, I guess.

Personally - I don't really use prestige classes myself, but I know (read) many others that do, so it could be a selling point for getting SoU also before dropping into HotU.
Some of the SoU skills are very nice (if a little cheesy :D ) such as Tumble that give a bonus of +1 to AC per 5 ranks :)

IMO the HotU expansion is loads better then SoU which was better then the original NwN, but I don't regret having bought and played (a couple of times) SoU. Besides SoU introduces the most fun NPC in NwN (so far) - who can stand for Deekin :D He is a funny little critter.

for some of the fighter classes I really really like the combos you can do with prestige classes. Especially considering that I can get a class to get crit threats on everyone around them 55% of the time with some combos like that.

Anyway if you really want prestige classes from HoTU, not SoU if you don't have it. Set up a trainer mod and build yourself up from level 1

Do you play PvP? I haven't seen a single decent (well to my standard) melee character that doesn't utilise a prestige class. Even if you only play casters you should still try Shifter and Palemaster.

Do you get the SoU spells (namely Isaac's Greater Missile Storm) if you only have HotU?

Some of the SoU prestige classes are also very cheesy *cough* Shadowdancer *cough* and Arcane Archer is the class with the highest attack base possible.

HotU will also a continuation of the SoU storyline so if you want to know why everyone is calling you a hero you need to have SoU (or I suppose you could read the 'worn book' in your inventory).
