Lathander Statuette?

[Spoilers]

Ooookay what the hell? Mae'Var's quest ended up being one where I had to steal the golden Lathander Statuette from the Temple of Lathander, a quest that usually is the one where you steal the necklace from the Temple of Talos. Everytime I touch the damn thing the alarm sounds and I've tried just about everything....okay, I tried two things, but still....what the hell?!

Anyone know how you're suppose to steal the statuette without setting off the alarm?

Okay I just read a piece on the quest and it seems that if you wait till night time, the guards fall asleep and you get a free shot at the stautette, but it is now midnight game time, and those meth freaks are still up! The faq also mentioned that your reputation matters but fails to go beyond that in detail. Does it matter in whether or not the alarm will go off? Does it matter in whether or not the guards will fall asleep?

Hmm... Can't help you, I'm afraid. I always get the other quest.

Could it be that the quest you get is where your Rep matters? I usually have a good Rep. Perhaps that's why I get the Talos quest.

Welp I've figured it out finally. Here is a list of what I did. Note, you might not have to do everything I mentioned, but this is what I did, and it worked, so here it is:

1) Enter the Temple of Lethander alone with your thief invisible, in my case it was Jan Jansen. No need for improved invis, a regular will do fine. But keep in mind that if you cast invis outside, a Cowled Mage will show up. I just used a potion.

2) Once inside, go to the safe and wait for the Dawnmaster next to it to walk away while remaining invis.

3) Once he's well out of view, pick the lock and grab the goods and wait a bit to see if the alarm goes off, it shouldn't now. Check to see if anyone has turned hostile just in case. Then just exit.

4) I did do it at night, but I have suspicions that this will probably work in the day time too.

Also, others have said to simply just wipe the whole building of Lathander minions. I've tried this a bit and they don't seem to contain any reputation hits. So this is a definite possiblilty.

Now, as for WHY I got this quest, alot of people claim that if your main character is evil, you will be assigned this one instead of the Telos necklace theft, but there have been numerous reports of people with good or neutral alignments receiving this quest.

I suspect that, as some has suggested, it's your reputation that matters, although mine was a 11, well within average when I received the quest. Perhaps it is the overall Reaction Adjustment numbers that determines which task you are assigned, because my charisma was only 9.

One last note, if you recieve the quest while Keldorn is in your party and within view of you and Mae'Var he will depart your company. Although, I do not know if this is for good, but the script does sound like he might not return. I just reloaded and kept him well in the back of the room and out of sight.

I did that same quest last night, but there were two guards in visual range during daytime, but rested till night and they were gone. :) :)

ayuh.. thieves are better in the dark. And that's one where it makes the biggest diff.

You don't even hafta make your thief invisible. If you wait long enough the dawnmaster eventually starts to walk around a bit. Just wait until he's strolled out of sight. The guards never turned on me and no alarm sounded either.

The alarm goes off when you open the safe so just make sure that the person who opens the safe is under the spell sanctuary and nobody else is close by. I hade my cat(SK thanks for that tip) pick the lock and then Viconia took the statue and nobody noticed anything.
You get this quest if protagonist is of neutral alignment I think.

Being Improved Invisible will often help when stealing. The game often checks whether someone is either truly invisible or shimmering when they open a certain container. Since you break true invisibility when opening stuff, being improved invisible allows you to steal unseen.
