Ashlanders good or bad?
Should good characters join them? Or evil ones?
I haven't joined them so I wouldn't know.

I kill two dwarves in the morning, I kill two dwarves at night. I kill two dwarves in the afternoon, and then I feel alright. I kill two dwarves in time of peace and two in time of war. I kill two dwarves before I kill two dwarves, and then I kill two more.
I may be bad, but I feel good.

Both
There are both good and bad Ashlanders. Of the four main clans only the leaders of the Erabenimsun are warlike and bad. The Ahemmusa are peaceful and good - they don't have a leader (ashkan) at all. The Zainab are traders (that's probably why the master merchantile trainer lives there). The Urshilaku are friendly as well. Then you have the little 3 person nomadic settlements. Some are good and some attack you on sight. A good camp is just south of Molag Mar over the mountains - another master trainer resides there. Most are bad though and when I encounter a group I let them make the first move just to be sure. If they're bad they will attack you without provocation, but I won't kill them until I know they mean me harm. Also you have the rogue Ashlander witches that hate men - I think there is only one group of these that you can be friendly with (the ones like near Erabenimsun camp that have kidnapped the Imperial guy). I don't kill these witches because you can exchange the Imperial for a jerk from the Erabenimsun's. All of the Ashlander's that have kidnapped someone for ransom are actually decent folk - I just pay the ransoms or make deals with them (there's one camp near Ald Velothi who have kidnapped a woman and want 500 gold for her release and there is a camp near Bal Isra and Maar Gan that have kidnapped a pilgrim who you can get released for 5 gold). You don't really "join" them so much as they make you a clanfriend.
