I just started a new game with a thief, rolled him quite nice stats. I picked missile weapons just to realize I he can't use crossbow (WTF?). So what do you think of these

1. Thief w/ sling +buckler
2. Thief w/ darts +buckler

As I recall, there was zip for good darts or bullets in BG1. I'd seriously consider rerolling if you're powergaming; otherwise, just enjoy the limitation, and use it strategically.

I would reroll, mostly cause I usually have my mage as the slinger/darter.
You could also use gatekeeper (editing program) to change your missileweaponskill to bowskill.

Get it here

Thieves CAN use *light* crossbows, last time i checked.

And however inconvenient it may be obtaining a good supply of magical darts, they're VERY fast...

The problems with darts are not limited to the availability of magical ones:
1. They also have a lower stack limit than arrows/bolts/bullets: 10 rather than 20.

2. They reside in the weapon slot rather than the ammo slot, so you can only have one stack operating at a time.

3. Once you run out (which happens frequently because of points 1 & 2) you don't automatically switch to a second weapon but run up and try to *slap* the monster with an empty hand.

4. There is no convenient way to reload in the midst of combat because pause is cancelled when you go into the inventory screen.

All of this makes the increased speed of darts more of a liability than an asset in my opinion.
