Hello,

this is the first time I post here, so hy everybody :)

The reason why is a MAJOR problem I have on playing BG2 : SoA.

First of all, I have played the game some time ago on an old pc (P233, 32 RAM, Win98SE). It was the bare minimum config, but .. it worked. And back then I was used to playing at that frame rate anyway :p

And you know how it is, you play the game till the end .. and .. you wanna play it again .. someday.

Now I have for some time another PC (AMD 1800, 512 RAM, Geforce 4, Win XP) and I installed BG2 on it (recommended).

The problem I have is that while playing the game my system hangs. It locks up. Ctrl-Alt-Delete doens't work, it just hangs, so reboot necessary. Sometimes, this occurs only after playing a while (let's say 30 minutes), but most of the times it occurs right away after loading my saved game.

Another problem I recently have (as from today) is that loading a game doesn't work anymore. I don't know, due to some patches I installed ? Due to a fresh install (full) ? It beats me .. the error message I get is : "Assertion failed in ChVidImage3d.cpp at line ..." and it throws me out of the game.

I really don't know where all these problems keep coming from.

The patches I tried : BG2FixPack361.exe, bg2soapatcheng.exe and bg2intlpatch.exe.

None of them does the job.

Is anyone familiar with these problems ? Because this is pretty annoying. I have in my hands one of the best games out there but I can't play it decently.

Help needed :)

Welcome

Have you tried the compatability function?
Select the baldursgate .exe file with the right mouse button, then select properties. Then you select compatability modus, for instance windows 98, perhaps even change moniter configuration.

It's no guarantee but who knows, never used it myself though.

Installing the newest drivers for your grafic / sound card can help too.

Try starting the game with sound off once too, then you know if it's your video or sound card. You can select this in the BG config screen IIRC.

Hope this helps. :)

Yes, I tried it .. first with the Win98 option.

Let me put it this way : HORRIBLE !

The game ran alright, but the frame rate was about 1 :s

Then I tried Win2000, frame rate ok .. but crash occured as usual.

Updating my drivers is a good idea. Now you mention it, it would be a logical cause. I will do that, thx :-)

Btw, I tried the game with the sound off .. the thing is, it was so 'out of place' that I quit the game quite soon.
Really, 'hearing' Minc and Boo talk by reading float text is quite BORING :p

What the monitor config has to do with it I don't understand however.

Regards,

Frodilon

It's an option with compatability mode.

But if it ran better you know it's your soundcart that's causing the problem. If it didn't make a difference, it must be something else (XP, videocard?).

Have you tried clearing the files from the Cache/Data folder in your SoA directory?

There might also be a possibility of a corrupt save game...have you tried creating a new game and seeing if the problem persists?

You should not have to force compatibility between XP and SoA...

What exactly have you installed? (What patches, what mods etc)

I have run BG2:SoB and ToB on 7 different computers in the past (including my current one) and I have never encountered problems such as the ones you describe.

It smells like properly aged turnip soup, ehm, I mean probably it's a video related problem. Do you have problems running other games? If I were in your shoes, I'd try to get my hands on a couple of different versions of your video card's drivers and try installing them in turn. Usually rolling back to the version that came with your videocard works (at least in my case). Of course, there's a whole bunch of other things about your system that might be preventing BG2 from working, but I'd definitely start with the video.

Oh, and running in compatibility mode is definitely not needed: BG2 runs beautifully on Win XP (as a matter of fact on Win2k and Win Server 2003). By enabling Win98 compatibility mode you are crippling yourself.

Best of luck,
