I just got this game, so I don't now how everything works in the game. So can somenone please help me out here. My Henchman Tommy won't pick locks for me, even when I select the phrase pick my locks when I fail! By the way I'm a fighter. Who knows how to get him pick my locks?
Hope to get an answer soon!

Well - firstly - are you running the latest version of the game. The game version currently is up to 1.62.
Otherwise...
He should in the default setting for his tactics pick locks after you have clicked on the locked item. (He should disarm traps he spots automatic)
When talking to him, you can set his tactics he should use, and in there is a convesation option to "help if I fail" or something - as you yourself say you have used.
But as default he should help.
When you click the locked item he should provide an audio statement wether or not he can pick the lock. Do you get this statement?
If you don't - try checking with the setting in the convesation about his tactics and make sure it is set to "help me when I fail".
If you get it the statement from him, and he still doesn't help, try kicking him from your "group" and inviting him again. Save/reload also to see if this helps.
Also - if you get the statement, and he dosen't move closer to the lock, it might be because his path is block (possible by your character), so try moving away just after you have clicked the locked item.
Other then these general items, I have no other idea, because I've not had problems of this kind myself.

Oooooooo yeah! Kept having this problem with Tomi and (currently) Sharwyn. You have to be very careful about how far away you move from the locked item, because otherwise they just follow you. I often can't make out if she's picking the lock, or looking at me adoringly.
If you get the chance for a familiar (if you change characters), I cannot recommend the Pixie enough. She's very weak to start with, but she outdid Tomi in lock picking and trap disarming skills, and now my wizard is 21st level, she can actually kill attacking creatures by herself.
However, I can't get Sharwyn to disable to traps. I tried telling her specifically with one electrical trap that didn't disable after we'd set it off. Result? She ran around like a headless chicken over the trap and got us all killed. *sigh*
