Korgan's Thac0...wa hawpen?

Okay, I'm trudging through Bohdi's little maze in the Asylum and Korgan hits level up. I go to the screen and look at his stats a bit closer before leveling him up. Lo and behold, his Thac0 was -1, and this was base! After bonuses and such, his thac0 was -9 with a Flail of Ages. Just for a comparasion, my level 13/20 Kensai/mage only had a thac0 base of 7.
I don't remember when he got this boost or why, but I'm pretty sure it was not like this when I first got him. Reading his Kit Description didn't reveal anything as to why he suddenly got this huge boost in thac0. Help me out here.

All the items that grants a bonus to thac0 shows in the "base thac0". I can this of the helm of Balduran, gauntlets of Weapons Skill and such. If he's 20th level his plain base thac0 is 1 and with both those items it's -1. As you haven't stated level or the items he wears, I can not help you further.
Unequep all items and compare his base thac0 with that of the base thac0 of a fighter his level, if they're the same you don't have a problem, besides not knowing what your items do.

Well he's level 24, and I know about item thac0 bonuses showing up as base, but at level 20, is there a special thac0 bonus that changes it to 1 regardless? Or is thac0 1 at level 20 just through natural progression? -1 Seems low for natural.

Base thac0 for a 20th and above level fighter is 1, without a kit that grants a bonus, which isn't the case with Korgan.
If your Korgan has a base thac0 of -1 then it's due to thac0 enhancing items.
Which part don't you understand?

Yes I know, right now his true base thac0 is 1. What I'm asking is simple, is his base thac0 being at 1 at level 20 a "special" bonus that he gets for being level 20, or is 1 something that is naturally achieved at having a cumulative -1 thac0 bonus applied everytime he accomplishes a certain amount of levels.

Alright, the fact that he has 1 for base thac0 is because he's 20th level. All 20th level fighters have that. A 1st level fighter has a 20 for base thac0 and that is reduced by one point every time he levels up until the 20th level. There's nothing special about Korgan.
