Ok so I'm fighting Irenicus at the Tree of Life. I like to summon a bunch of monsters to help pound his ass. After I kill him, I am transported to hell and the summoned monsters are continuing to fight him, and I cannot rest or save because it says I am still in battle. Do I have to have any summoned monsters when I kill him or what?

if you just wait, the monsters will unsummon and hopefully that'll help things.

Which monsters did you summon? It could be a while if you summoned, say, a fire elemental.
