What is the use of specializing in magic classes?

This seems to be more of a question for the SoA forum, Kamui, so I'm moving your post over there. And welcome to GameBanshee.

Well..
You get one extra spell memorized per level (i.e. one extra first level spell, one second, etc.) BUT you cannot cast ANY of the spells in the opposition school. Conjurors and Illusionists do OK, I suppose, but Necromancers and Transmuters really get the shaft.

If you specialize in a class there is plusses and minuses. Plus side, you get an extra spell per level. Minus, you have a counter school of magic that you can not cast at all.
If you're a Transmuter, per say, you can't cast magic from the class of Alteration. You do get another spellslot upon leveling up, though.

i advise not to specialize a mage unless it is a big party or u got another mage that can make up for the spells u cannot use. u really need all the different schools to suceed

Unless of course you're a wild mage. Then you don't have any opposition school and you can get all the spells.
But, on the odd occasion that you get a 'wild surge' instead of the spell you wanted, it can bugger up the battle royally.

Wildmages are very fun to play, and can be very powerfull.
They have an extra firstlevel spell that lets them cast any spell they have memorized. The only downside is that they also make a wildsurge then.
So with a little luck a lvl1 mage can cast timestop
If you do play a wildmage, i recommand not to reload on a negative roll to make the game more intresting.

Don't you start on level 7 at the beginning of this game?

yes, but this was just an example.
A lvl1 wildmage could cast timestop. A lvl7 wildmage has even a bigger chance

it's not any spell they have memorised, it's any spell in their book.

Choice of specialist mage just depends on the party makeup. For example Conjurers don't need another general mage, they just need an inquisitor in the party (Keldorn). Other different combinations work too, as well.
