Dual class Sarevok into a Mage?

Note: my game is still in SoA. I won't have to worry about this for a while yet.
Check my party:
Protagonist: Berserker 13 -> Cleric X
Minsc
Jaheira
Imoen
I'd like to add Sarevok, but I don't know which way I'll get more out of the character. He'd make a great additional Tank to the team (no matter what), but I think the team could also use a nice backup mage, which S could be. With a smaller party (5 if Sarevok joins up), I figure he'll advance faster as well.
Additional questions: What level is Sarevok at when you first meet him? About how far into the game would it be until he regained these Fighter levels?

IIRC he joins at lvl 18.

It will take an eternity for Sarevok's mage level to surpass his fighter level. He will end up as a crapy mage anyways.
Either keep him as a pure fighter or dual him to a Thief(wielding the Holy Avenger...). Thieves level up much faster than mages. And high thieving skills are really in demand in TOB.

why the heck would he end up as a crappy mage?????
a level 18 fighter with 19 mage levels would absolutely own at the end of the game. you forget that a fighter mage should never be played like a mage. use your tanks to distract while the fighter/mage buffs and watch him plow into battle. can you imagine sarevok with a stoneskin, mirror image, improved haste and pfmw?
yaga shura wouldn't stand a chance. and if you8 leave WK til ToB then the exp is not that hard to pick up.

And, if you want some action, play with him and immy only, and you'll reach the xp cap in no time, with Watchers keep being disrupted side by side with the children of bhaal.

By the time Imoen is able to cast timestop and imprisonment, Sarevok will struggle with magic missles, only being able to cast two at a time. And with his inability to wear armor, he sure will nead those mirror images and stoneskins. Just pray no one casts breach or dispell, or Sarevok will be dead in a matter of minutes. And I'm not even mentioning the fact that he will be a burden throughout most of the game. Do you really want to spend 50% of your time making sure the mage can stay alive, only to have a mediocre character at best for the other 50% of the time after he regains his fighter status? If you want a fighting type who can cast buffs on himself, get Haer'Dalis. He can cast mirror image, protection from magical weapons, stoneskin, blur, improved haste, and whatever else you wish while still being able to wear armor and you wouldn't even have to put up with a useless character half of the game. To top that, with item upgrade mod you would be able to combine the Sylvian Chain and the Red Dragon armor into one of the best pieces of mail in the game, as well as being able to forge Creeping Chaos and Inevitable Entropy, which while not über are more than decent.

When I was playing evil, I dualed him to mage as soon as he entered my party, even before I levelled him up from his initial XP boost from joining. He's really not much of a burden as a fledgling mage, since he's got oodles and oodles of hitpoints. Once I got him to about 7th level (which took very little time, considering how much XP you get for scribing the 30+ spells you'll want/need throughout ToB) I kicked Edwin out and went on my merry way. Sticking the Robe of Vecna or Aslyferund Chain on 'em makes him near-invincible anyway.
Of course, after Edwin was gone, I only had four characters, but it was still a load of fun. (Me + Vicky + Korgy + Sarey-poo. Nothing better than making up pet names for bloodthirsty CE psychopaths.)
