Defeating Balor-SPOILER

Hello Everyone,

I am currently in the middle of Chpt. 5, but have not been able to get past the creature (Balor) in Svirfneblin. I have tried at least 5 times already to beat him; I've changed tactics each time. My party consists of me (a Swashbuckler), Minsc, Jaheria, Sir Anomen, Nalia, & Inomen. I have thrown every summoned creature, every spell, & just beat on Balor, but I can't get past him. WHAT can I do??????

One other thing, can I go to each of the Dungeons first & still accomplish those quests before I go into Ust'Natha?

Thanks,
Xanthar

To go in reverse,
Spoiler (Highlight the text beneath to read)
yes you can defeat all 3 dungeons before doing the related Drow quests before going to the drow city
Second, the balor requires enchanted weapons to "kill" him, +3 or better I think, so check to see if your getting the weapon ineffective message. The balor also has a hefty spell res so a couple of lower res and then a bolt of glory and such may do the trick.
You can also try setting a bunch of traps before he appears and then let him get nailed by the traps.
Personally I never had a problem with the balor, though I was annoyed that jaheira couldn't do dmg with belm and it resisted my spells until I cast the lower res.
Remember to cast the stoneshape scroll after you "kill" it

Tactics ahead: :)

If you have access to Lower Resistance spells have Imoen and Nalia both cast that on him before anything - then pound the demon with Magic Missile successively - It won't always work, but if you keep at it they eventually will go through and cause damage (Spell Sequencer works well for this).

Most importantly, try Priest spells that focus on demons and evil creatures like Bolt of Glory - Anomen will be able to cast it in the upper levels. If he doesn't have this spell yet you're likely not prepared enough level-wise to face the demon, so you'd be best off going to the other three caves and killing the beasties in there for experience. :)

If your not leveled up enough to face the demon, that is fairly suprising but again, trapping works fine if your level is too low

Protection from mind effects, esp stun and fear are very important.

Or.. if you want to be really cheap, sleazy and cheesy about it, there is always the option of turning into the Slayer :D
Not nearly as fun or satisfying as the above methods though ;)

Don't feel bad. This sucker had me on the ropes many times too. Underline the above (apart from traps - that cheese reeks) but also get your tanks hasted and strengthed to the max for some high speed slice and dice.

have fun :)
