Why is there such big difference between the priest spell and the mage spell of animal summoning III ? When Imoen cast this spell I normally just get an ettergap, willst when Jaheira cast one she gets three spotted lions/to bears/two winter vulfs. In my opinion anyone of these are better than any of the annimals Imoen can summon.
Why the big difference ????
Or does anyone disagree ?
I'm sure you'll tell me your opinion...

Both priests and mages have much better summoning spells - because of 5 monsters cap it is better to summon several elementals/aerial servants/ effreties/ Nishruu/ skeletons(esp. skeleton warriors) than using animal summoning that creates relatively weak creatures.
Yes, animal summoning was good spell in BG1 - there you could have the army of even 40 or more creatures but because of mentioned monsters cup this tactics is useless in BG2.

Summoning carrion crawlers or mountain bears is handy.
Even the pathetic Cernd can take down enemies with those Huge mountain bears.

Why is there such big difference between the priest spell and the mage spell of animal summoning III ?
Because the mage's version is
Monster Summoning, and calls 16 Hit Dice of monsters, whereas the priest's spell summons 2-3 animals with 12 Hit Dice or less. Check the spell descriptions yourself. The only worthwhile mage summoning spells, IMO, are Invisible Stalker, Wyvern Call, and Mordenkainen's Sword.
