Easily: Celestial Fury. 1D10+3 base, so it all gets multiplied. Good chance of stunning the victim, so they can't react, plus that 5% chance of 20 points of electrical damage as well. Ouch!

If you wield 2 weapons, how will backstab work then?

I've heard that the Staff of Striking works...which would make it even better in terms of total damage.

As far as having 2 weapons, you'll have about a 50% chance of using either one unless one is ineligible.

If you want to do a lot of backstabbing, I recommend using only 1 with the possible exception of an off-hand Crom Faeyr for the Str bonus. Using 1-weapon skill will enable you to get Crit hit and double the damage twice as often.

if u have a assassin/mage weilding the Staff of the magi does that give a good backstab ??
or doesn't a staff backstab?

Any weapon suitable for backstab can be wielded by single-class thieves, and all melee weapons single-class thieves can wield (including staves and clubs) can be backstabbed with. (Clubs seem reasonable to me..the classic thief with a blackjack. But a Staff??? But them's the rules.) However, single-class thieves can't wield the Staff Of The Magi, so a Mage/Thief or Fighter/Mage/Thief can't backstab (backwhack) with it.

Good point on the Staff Of Striking...that's gotta hurt.

Due to a bug, sometimes a dual-wielding thief will attack with their offhand first in a backstab. Backstab should always be with the dominant hand.

But can someone tell me what the hell is wrong with my Valygar? He won't backstab. I wear only the Celestial Fury when I backstab and strike straight from behind. And yet, no extra damage. WHY??? Is he only able to backstab humans, elves, orcs and stuff or what is it? H-E-L-P!

You are backstabbing from being invisible/concealed, right? Other than that, maybe you aren't high enough level to get the multiplier...also, I know the sword he starts with doesn't work.

And yes, backstab doesn't work on Beholders, Dragons, Golems, etc.

Robin_Hood,

Valygar's problem is with his Katana. There is a bug that prevents him from using his Family blade as a backstabbing weapon. You can install a fix for this at Baldurdash or one of the other unofficial patch sites. Or you can equip him with a different weapon like CF.

Hmm, maybe I've tried to backstab the wrong creatures, there really aren't many humans in the Asylum Image But I did use CF, not his personal blade. And he is lvl 14. Well, the next human that crosses my path...*evil grin*

The problam with Valygar is that he uses a weapon that thieves cannot use, only he is allowed to use it. When you backstab, the program checks if the weapon is allowed to thieves. If it's not, no backstab.

Damn, Valygar still won't backstab! He did in the beginning, but not anymore. Is he allowed to use a helmet while backstabbing? Is there ANYTHING I should know about? I'm very pissed off about this. And yes, I do use CF only, when I backstab. Not the family blade. And directly from behind. And I tried it on a human.

@Robin_Hood:
What do you mean by "won't backstab"?
Can't he hit the target or is the damage not multiplied?

Is the backstab damage x2 listed in his character sheet?

I don't know about helmets but I think he should be able to backstab if the "hide in shadows" is not greyed out.

No damage multiplier, the same damage as with normal hits. It says he has, was it 2x, multiplier when backstabbing or something. Anyways, he should be able to backstab. And yes, I am have always "hide in shadows" on when I try it. Earlier in the game, when I used his personal blade, it said that the weapon is inadequate to bacstabbing but now it doesn't say anything. This is really starting to bother me. Image

What else is Valygar wearing/equipped with?

Keep in mind that the first hit must connect too, when you are leaving shadows or invis. If it misses, then you gotta go hide again and try again. And yes you can backstab golems (ie stone golems, flesh, etc) as long as they arent immune to the weapon, or immune to it because its not enchanted enough (+3 or less etc).

I don't know what has happened, but I just backstabbed a mind flayer, so it seems to work just fine now. I really have no idea what the problem was. Thanks for everything guys.
