I've been through that quest five times. This doesn't mean I did 'em well, but I have tried different approaches. Here's what worked for me:
Several times I used Mass Invisibility to get relatively close, while sending in a few low level summoned creatures as cannon fodder. My party was spread out, just in case one of the cute little named terrors tried to cast a long distance area effect spell. I cast several resistance lowering and dispelling spells at 'em, then followed up with magic missiles.
Another time, I used some staves picked up on other quests to summon several elementals. These were tough enough to prevent the halflings from paying attention to my group, as I waded in after some damage had been done.
Be sure to have resistance lowering, dispel and detect invisibility spells handy. They're not at all tough once you can get 'em to drop their spells. If they destroy anything you've summoned, summon some more. You want to keep the little misfits too busy with summoned melee attackers to concentrate on either your group, or their own spell-based defenses.
If you don't have a summoning rod or spells, who's in your party? Keldorn makes a good character to throw in among the halflings, particularly if he has some good resistance items and the boots of speed.

I did't find them too difficult due to my party. Jan's spectroscopes are a godsend when they go invisible and good missile weapons on your spellcasters can nobble the more evil spells that they try to cast. Summoning spiders and elementals is a good way of forcing them to fight instead of just casting, and if you send them in first and get your tanks to follow, they will pretty much ignore you and try to kill your pets. Otherwise, try to make sure you don't run straight in - if they all open up at once they are deadly. But remember to use your ranged weaponry

These are all good tactics...I personally used a lot of Hide-in-shadows and if you have a thief and Valygar They can both sneek up behind the halflings you mentioned and BACKSTAB BACKSTAB BACKSTAB

if you got a cleric with skelly warriors send 2 in, follow, and watch in leisure as they munch up everyone.

i was wondering how do u backstab. i thought u had to go in the shadows and then go from behind them and then attack. i tryed to backstab once but when i did stealth in the shadows i went out into the corridor and i got unstealthed. how do i make it so that i'm always stealth and where do i actually stealth at? i tried finding where to hide but it doesn't work. I have Jan. so where exactly do i stealth at?
i other thing is i heard u could just silence them before u even see them. by using the silence spell 15' distance it would be great and once the mages are silenced then i could just in and rape them

. is this more effective than the rest?

First of all you have to hit the hide in shadows button till you see the msg that you have succeeded. Make sure you have a respectable amount of skill points in hide in shadows AND move silently so it'll work more reliably. In order for hide in shadows to work at all you need to be outa any enemy's line of sight. Basically if your thief can see anything with a red circle under it then it won't work.
You need to be directly behind the intended victim, no more frontal backstabs like BG1. After that you just attack normally with a thief usuable weapon. If a vanilla thief can equip it w/o the use any item skill then you can backstab with it, this includes katanas (my fav), shortswords, longswords, daggers, clubs and quarter staffs. Might have missed some but you get the picture.
Potions and spells that render you invis work as well and even better than hide in shadows. I'm not sure if protection from undead works.. gotta look into that.

I usually go for the summons bombarding. What you do is recharge the summoning rod and use it twice. Stand about 1 screen away from the action and send the dudes in one at a time. Waste their spells and lure them to you. Remember that victory usually are won by the person who picks the battleground
Save your spells for really hard fights like demi-lich and dragons.
