I'm going to make an evil character for a change in BG2. I was wondering, what is the best melee fighter in the game? I want someone who can just make bodies explode :) Suggestions on race/class/weapon specialization please?

Hmm..: Dwarwen Barbarian --- Warhammers or something?
Human Monk

Just a couple of suggestions :)

The kensai/mage, IMO, with those weapon skill points in longswords. Takes a good while to get going, but that class is a killer.

Dwarven Berserker, Hammers, then Axes.

I've played mine (Angus McDarrin) through SoA once or twice, and through ToB twice. Love him to death. Right equipment, and no mage can even do damage; fighters can try, but an AC that averages at -18 is damn tough to hit. He's a mages' best friend too...can take all the damage in the world while other fellow sits back and casts spells.

Though Inquisitors are a lot of fun too.

Korgan is the best evil melee I can think of.

Fighters gets the most proficiencies and the beserkers have the most perks of them all. The best weapons in the game are the Crom Freya(warhammers) and the Equalizer(long swords).
At high levels, five star proficiency in warhammers, four in long swords and three in two weapons style will make you lethal. Not to mention the 25 strength you get...

My vote goes for the fighter, max-out your chosen weapon(s) and dual weapon style..your a combat god w/the addition of some proper equipment.

If you like to make plans and prepare before battles, I recommend the Kensai/Mage.

If you just wanna go right in I recommend a the dwarven berserker.

The assassin would be a nice alternative if you want to finish off your ennemies with just one hit and don't min sneaking around a bit.

youre all wrong, sorry! but is either kensai cleric, combination of righteous magic, all hits do double damage, and obscene thalco if kensai at high levels. dual a little high, around 16 or so, have not worked out math. or assassin fighter, run assasssin solo until you get to around use any item and dual immediately. poison and whirlwinds will disrupt spell casting and leave enemies behind ina froth of green, twitchy bodies.

defense is tougher....

monk or wiz slayer, I think the monk wins out in magic resist. A high wislayer theif dual? this dual is actually pretty easy to survive, as you keep magic resist until the first class activates. of course. this class uses imp haste from ring of vecna and dual wield scarlet ninja to and something nasty. once you get gauntlets of really good whacking skill, from watchers, you can reach 5 attacks per round, add impr haste and you're in like flint!!! long duration whirlwind, with 10 attacks per, and your primary hand has good +5 wep like foe bane.

defense, I think straight berserk, with possibly mage dual, very tough and very hard to take down with mislead and other s.

@User

I am *never* wrong. ;) :D

Actually, I think JustCurious wanted one character, not two separate (for offense and defense).

An alternative to the Kensai/Mage, should you like to use magic, is the Blade. Absolutely unstoppable while on Tenser's and with Stoneskin and other protections up - offers a nice mix of offense and defense. Also a good team-player.

Why Dwarven? I just made a Half Orc Beserker and my god, did they even balance this game out? He's unstoppable it seems. Makes me scared to go back and finish my Monk. I'm in chapter 3 with the monk...but at the rate this evil beserker (2 handed sword mastery) goes through enemies he'll be in chapter 3 in 30 seconds.

Because nobody mentioned them and they have some merit as choices (although most aren't even fighters).

Pity about your evil requirements, but Undead Hunter - Negative plane prot and with Carsomyr NOTHING stays alive long. This combination is essentially cheese.

Half Orc Assassin - you want things to go splat? Nothing says 'pile of offal' quite like a x7 backstab.

With TOB

Again, why does it have to be evil? Fighter/Druid multi - Ironskins and Defensive Harmony more than make up for the down sides. You will almost never take damage. Test drive Jaheira today (only one previous owner - tends to pull to one side, or the other)!

I don't disagree with the other suggestions but these are worth considering too. - Curdis

My old character was a good at melee, he was a lvl 16 human fighter (+++++ long sword / +++ dual wielding) dual classed to mage.

With Tenser's Transformation as the final battle preparation spell he had far more than 300 HP.

The tank in my party is a half-orc berserker.

When I created him I used my rolls to max out his STR and CON. He is level 10 now and has 140 hp. He duels the Flail of the Ages and Frostreaver (+3 Battle Axe). However, I am always looking for better weapons...

I think if you are going to run an "evil" PC the half-orc would be a great option. You know dam well if you were a half-orc you would have lots of issues!

How about if went with katanas? There's a warning about how they're hard to find, but they're cool as hell!

Why are you guys keep refer to TOB stuff like whirlwind and foe bane? I thought SOA forum will restrict the level of players and the equipment they can have...

You only need boots of speed, ring of gaax, cloak of mirroring, Celestrial Fury and Crom Faeyr to beat everyone else to pulp. Obviously having a lot of hit points helps, not to mention being able to defy imprisonment!

They really should have a SOA or TOB tournment so we can stop the argument once an for all. 1 on 1, 2 on 2, 3 on 3 and so on...
