BUG? I can't talk to Edwin, he appears to be busy :(

Shoot, I think I might have run into a show stopping bug, but I certainly HOPE not! Maybe someone else has a fix for this?

After bringing the amuet from the Talos temple to Mae'Var, he tells me to go up and talk to Edwin on the third floor. I go up there, Edwin is there, but when I try and talk to him, it says I cannot initial dialog because Edwin "appears to be busy". UGHH!!
Here are some things I've tried to fix this:

1) Tried to sleep at an Inn 8 times, for 8 hours each, thinking that maybe I had to wait a day or two before talking to him. But it didn't work.

2) Zoned out of the Docks District and then back in.

3) Quite the game and came back in.

4) I even reloaded a save game from an hour prior, and had went straight for the amulet, then Mae'Var, then Edwin, and the SAME problem occured!

Man, I hope someone has an answer for this, because I can't even continue the game if I can't talk to Edwin--this is a main storyline quest. Plus I really wanted him in my party.

Does anyone have ANY clues? I way to far into the game to start over, and am really enjoying BG2.

Thanks MUCH in advance!

Wow. That sucks. I've never ran into that problem - plus I never take Edwin so less I hear out of him the better! From the sounds of it your save game file might be corrupted... Not sure how you would work around that one. What patches do you have installed?
Yet another example that points to the fact that Edwin is a jerk...

I have the latest BG patch from Black Isle, as well as the Bug Fix patch set from Baldurdash installed.

I'll do anything to fix this, because otherwise it means the game is over.

One things that happened, but I doubt it's related is that I was using the amulet from the Green gem amulet that you get from summoning and then killing a Mordenkainen's Sword. This casts a Mental Shield spell on you. The Baldurdash bug fix makes this amulet disappear after you cast it once, which it did the next time I cast the amulet. But on my characters mini portrait, and in his info screen the Mind shield icon is still there...but my character has been Held in several battles, so even though the spell icon is there, my character is not protected.

I added the Baldurdash patch a long time ago, and everything has worked fine since. I've done many quests including the planar sphere and the Umar Hills--although I had to leave before I killed him, because I was getting my buttocks kicked. :)

Hmm that is a weird bug...I recommend going ahead and killing him (yes you heard right) and then use

CluaConsole:CreateCreature("Edwin9")

Then try and talk to him.
That might fix the problem, if it dosent there are some more things we could try, but do that first.(Also I am assuming you know how to use the cluaconsole lines, if you dont then post and i will further explain.

Ahem... I would just like to say that if you don't want to then you don't have to do that quest with Mae'Var. It is not the main story line. The main story line is collecting 20,000 for Gaelan Bayle. But if you don't do the quest you will miss out on some cool stuff.

Ahh, as soon as I loaded up a saved game to try your idea Kensai, I was able to talk to Edwin. Very odd, since I not only quit the game several times, but I also started playing again from a long previous saved game.

Maybe it was something in the cache file that need to be cleared out?

Weird! Very scary also, since I thought my whole game was bugged.

Thanks much in advance, guys!

@ HiColonic - Glad to hear that everything worked out! Scary as hell when stuff like that happens though, no? I second KensaiRyu's suggestion. You should kill him. Even though he now talks, kill him anyway. The only good Red Wizard is a dead Red Wizard...
Have fun,
