I was looking through the Bioware FAQ and came across this:

Q:Can I have a familiar or a pet?
A: Yes, we have permitted wizards to have familiars, such as Imps, and rangers may have animal companions.

The only ranger I know of who has an animal companion is a certain brain-addled NPC we all know and love. Was this feature pulled? Or is there something I don't know about?

The Beastmaster kit can summon spirit animals

Ah yes, thank you. I looked it up - Special Ability = Find Familiar.

Anyone know what kind of familiars they get? Is hamster an option?

Their animal companions are the same as the mage familiars. Your alignment chooses for you.
