hi,
i just recently finished Baldurs Gate, and am about to purchase bg2 and tob. I was wondering what effect importing would have on my character. Let me explain. I am a level 8 paladin with 161 000 exp (finished totsc) and i have specialised in bows and large swords and have one star in axes. However since there are way more weapon catergories (sp?) in soa, i was wondering whether i would be allowed to choose again or something. Also as a paladin would i be given the choice of being a cavalier, undead hunter or inquisitor. This also poses a further question on what would happen to my specialisation in bows if i chose to be a cavalier who are not allowed to use them.
Any help answering these questions will be much appreciated

You will get the option to choose a Paladin kit or stay a plain Paladin. Weapon proficients are reset, and you will be able to put them into the weapon classes available in BG2.

So, at level 8 you have 6 proficient points; that mean you'll start fresh in terms of proficients, with 6 points to put where ever you want.
