Move Silently

Sorry, I'm sure this has been discussed before, but the search doesn't seem to be working for me.
Anyway, the question: what the hell does the thief ability move silently do? Is it necessary at all?

ParadoxIncarnate,
The game can both hear and see. So theoretically a theif who has sucessfully hidden (in Shadows) AND moved silently should not prompt the AI opponents to suddenly hit an invisibility purge or true seeing.
As your thief is generally being lead around by some goon in full plate (Or a mage who can't shut up) it really doesn't make a whole hill of beans difference - the opponent is going to cast such spells to ensure that there is no pesky theif sneaking around.
When you solo a theif you WILL notice the difference. - Curdis

just get cloak of non detect, this automatically makes you impossible to hear, I think. contrary to common misconception, non detect will NOT block true sight, but certain monsters will require char to dice roll and if fail they will cast cre file scripted true sight or inv purge. this is how I understand the process.

Not sure how the Cloak really works, but I do know that it prevents my stealthed thief from being revealed by True Sight.

equipp staff of magi while wearing cloak, and walk into ribalud. ribauld will cast true sight, and you become visible. his script kicks in automatically, but monsters will need low skills or you do something before their script kicks in. the only protection agaisnt true sight is spell immunity divination. this is also the finest spell defense known, as your inv cannot be dispelled and you cannot be taargetted with any spells, excpt area effect if the creature has them scripted in.
well known misconception, and one that xyx, sabre and others have talked about extensively in various thread. the cloak is great for backstabbing creatures that cannot see inv, like certain liches, and in effect makes your mage very much like a thief, no backstab multiplier, but you can sneak your mages in close to unlease chains or spell triggerd nastys or just spell as first strike.

According to my experience, the CLoak of Non-Detection *does* prevent a True Sight to reveal a thief. In the Underdark, my thief could stand next to two drow priests while they both had a True Sight acitve, and he did not become visible...

did they cast when teh thief appeared in visual range, or did they have it active while the thief moved into range? big diff, if you move into visual range while true sight was cast previously, I've found this is not all that reliable. true sight will always dispell illusion spells when enemy is in range and you cast the spell, but if enemy moves in while spell active, there is a signifiant chance of true sight not working.
after whacking the big I in asylum, the assassins moved in and they did not have inv purged until I cast again. was still able to backstab.
true sight does have limits, glitterdust is great for backup.

I just walked into them, and then they started casting, so I took the "full effect".
