What does the abbility open doors in you're statistics screen stand for? I've been wondering about it since BG1!

IIRC It has to do with being able to force open locks. You'll find that anyone can attempt to open a locked door or chest, simply select the little sword icon down the bottom (or press F2) and put the mouse coursor over a locked item, you'll see that it highlights and you can tell a character to try to force it open. Obviously using a thief with their lock picking skills is the better way to go, but it's there should u not have the option of using a thief. The higher your strength, the better the chance of you forcing the lock.

ahh, it becomes really annoying if you dont have a thief in your party and you need to force open every lock. right now i have that problem too. im looking forward to being able get my hands on crom fayer. sigh, but that will still be a while. :(

With 25 str, you can open locks that can be opened by a thief with 80 in lock picks.

Without thief I don't bother with forcing locks, I just use knock. It's the only level 2 spell I use.

I assume you also use the Detect Traps spell? :) Some of those little doom-laden thingees are pretty dangerous.

No, I don't bother with that. I can't disarm them without a thief anyway.

Yoshimo,

If that wasn't a spoiler I don't know what is. Please adjust your posts to indicate if they contain spoilers. - Curdis

Just lead with your fighter, if you run into a trap anything that needs saving basically gets saved.

yoshi,

oops, sorry, forgot your reply to renal when he called you yoshi....

anyway, this is the whole reason some people create and re create chars until they get a useful number of draw on holy might. you can get 25 str and thus do not need crom to bash in locks.

might I also suggest the cloak of mirrors or staff of magi? the nsty disinto traps will be absorbed or bounced by those items. this and minor spell turning are the most often used by parties or solo without thief skills.
