Which is better with consideration that i am not using Kelvin's Patch which allows Paladins to use Amulet of Power

since you can still use the mace to protect from level drain, inquisitor.
you will have to decide if the dispel & truesight out weighs the undead hunters casting ability,
i think it does.

All things considered, I'd use the Cavalier ...
1. Undead Hunter
Buy 'protection from undead' scrolls & you'll have no problems whatsoever with the undead. (there's no 'protection from dragons' scroll in the game - which, btw. would be nice =))
2. Inquisitor
True Sight & Dispel Magic are nice, but you can somewhat emulate them. f.eg. Book of infinite spells ...

the inquisitor is the best paladin kit IMO....but i cannot imagine a solo paladin....it's not a class i'm too involved with

I prefer to use the Inquisitor. Yes! Vampires and other level draining mobs are nasty but so are the multitude of High level mages. A cleric, Paladin or Druid can always use Protection form Level drain spells and you should always get the Mace of Disruption +2( which slays undead and protects against Drain). You should also always purchase AzureEdge too which will also kill undead bloody quick & often at range.
If you are a priest of Lathander, you also get plenty of Additional protections such as Boon of Lathander.

Whooops! forgot to talk about the inquisitor. In HTH mages fail their spellcasting. Plus to have plenty of Instant dispel magics when your group is charmed or held or any other nasty effect. Finally true seeing is a godsend. the number of times its saved by ass by pin pointing the invisble dangers. EG the real bad guy and not the simulcrum. or Something invisible full stop or hidden.
At first I wondered whether Keldorn was of any use when I first started playing BGII. By the time I had used him for 2 hours I was sold. Inquistors rock.

undead hunters are immune to level drain

yes - I know that undead hunters are immune to level drain

.
My point was that use a cavalier & when encoutering vampires etc. just use potection from undead scrolls and it's a walk in the park.
Also even though the inquisitor rocks in multiplayer its abilities aren't that great when you are soloing. Except True Sight, which you can emulate anyway when in desperate need.

I soloed the game with an undead hunter and it was real easy (assuming you are familiar with the quests).I believe this kit is better for soloing.
Inquisitor abilities are more useful in a team.

I agree. For soloing a cavalier is most helpful. The priest spells really help, and the added bonuses are a plus. Besides, with the holy avenger (from a monster that a cavalier is made to kill), one gets to dispel magic just like an inquisitor. True seeging is need, but as mentioned previously can be emulated. In addition missle weapons can be substituted with darts, or certain wands if you can't reach those pesky kolbods in hard to reach areas. Cavaier's rock.

I agree. After all, Dispel Magic would then be used solely on enemies, which I don't think it's all that great for. Since you obviously can't cast it while held/confused/otherwise buggered up it's useless in that respect. Undead Hunters are immune to hold anyway.

Hmmm, while I don't agree that the undead hunter is the best fighter kit, IMO it is easier to solo with any fighter kit (except the wizard slayer) than with a paladin. I have solo'd with a cavalier and it was one of my least favorite experiences. I have solo'd with a berserker fighter kit and it was a hundred times better. I'm going to make the assumptions that the differences in kits will not be great enough to make up for the huge difference that I found in my own experience.

Why
darts? Why not Azuredge or Firetooth?

I said darts as an example of missle weapons that can be used. I most especially like the darts created by the cloak of stars (6, +5 darts/day). There are a bunch of other weapons that can also be used out there. One of which include the two mentioned above and boomerang dagger as well. It's just an example of what cavaliers are penalized for can be substituted by other items.

Now I have looked into it a little more deeply. Undead hunter is better than Inquisitor or Cavalier FOR SOLO. However, why don't you use a berserker. Berserker is the best solo fighter kit. And after that comes the Kensai. If you're worried about level drain Don't becuase you can just pick up the MOD+2 really early.
Coming from someone who has successfully solo'd a Paladin< don't do it man, save yourself from the misery.
It's not that they are hard. They aren't hard or easy. Lukewarm. You get no challenge + no intersting stuff. Just get that Carsomyr and slowly whack your way through the game. I'd reccommend not though.

What makes Kensai so special in solo? They seem the
least versatile kit in BG2 (save perhaps for the Wizard Slayer). All they can do is hit stuff hard...
Love to hear why I'm wrong

Xyx, your right, the Kensai kit is not very versatile. I think that the Berserker kit is worlds ahead of the Kensai. However, the Kensai IMO is still better than the other two fighter kits, even for solo. If you have ever played a Kensai, you know that they can really deal out lots of damage once they are dual weilding with Kai activated. You may disagree, I don't swear by the Kensai like I do the Berserker, I'm just saying that they do maintain a decent second place. That's all

just wondering how the undead hunter is going to kick Firkaag's ass.... it is going to be tough

Yup, my point exactly ...
I've never had any problems dealing with the undead, while I've had lot's of problems with the dragons / demons in the game (while I was relatively low level - that is)
