I sure this topic has been posted many times already. However, I would be very interested in hearing what your favorite spell(s) is(are) and specifically your reasoning for your choice.

I've always been partial to Ray of Enfeeblement, not because it is uber-powerful or anything, but simply becasue I enjoy walking into the Noble Order of the Most Radiant Pansys and making them all too weak to lift their weapons before I systematically wipe them all off the face of the planet. I also love Time Stop, since I can cast Meteor Storm, Ice Storm, and Earthquake before time runs out, and make it seem like it the Apocolypse. It looks really cool and dishes out an arse-load of damage. I have a cap-removed Cleric/Mage, by the way.

I have found the 2 essential spells for my mages: Stoneskin and mirror image, these two are (almost) total protection. Chaos is a fun spell to throw in early , all the summoning spells help.

1. Sunfire (x3 in Spell Trigger). This does a lot of damage. E.g., I took my mage into the beholder pathway in the fear trial in hell. After firing the spell trigger, there was an Elder Orb left, near death.

2. Death Spell. Get rid of irritants instantaneously, especially Umber Hulks and Mind Flayers.

3. Melf's Minute Meteors, since they can hurt most anything, Golems in particular...

4. Simulacrum and Project Image, for the cheap tactics with scrolls and single-use items.

5. Stoneskin, Fireballs or Flame Arrows in a Spell Sequencer, Abi-Dalzam's, and Time Stop. (Ok, these aren't exactly news.)

My favourite spells are actually druid spells. Insect plague and call lightning. Too bad call lightning can only be used outdoors :) First time I used it was on that mad cleric in the docks area. He got absolutely fried. It does insane amount of damage. Insect plague, well it is almost too good.

Call Lightning works well against those vampires in the outdoor encounters, too. :)

My favorites would have to be Summon Insects (or its higher level counterpart) and the mage spell Trigger. Trigger might be cheating since you can stick 3 spells in there, but it's soooo good (a favorite against dragons). :P

How 'bout some basic ones.

Armor of Faith- great lvl 1 spell- gets better as you progress

Silence 15' Rad.- I used to never use this spell. Don't know why. Early in the game, it's great against enemy mages and clerice, especially groups of 'em. I often have 2 clerics hurl that into the enemy as my fighters rush 'em. It would make for a strange combat scene in reality.

Melf's Minute Meteors- great RoF, good dam, hurts just about everything.

Holy Smite- good, low-level area effect spell that won't damage your party. Gets better as you do.

Spell Triggers and Contingencies- especially for Cleric/Mages. Just plain cool. Adds new wrinkle to spellcasting strategy.

Just a few that come to mind.

Even though I have wanted to, I have never used Melf’s Minute Meteors. Do strength adjustments (both to hit and damage bonuses) apply?

I'm pretty sure I said this before but anyway, you can call lightning indoors with the staff of thunder and lightning (even with the patch).
As for my fave spells, abi dalzim (goes without saying), cone of cold (if you have robe of vecna it takes out a lot of people real fast), chain lightning (same reason), simulacrum (because of the divination bug) and divination (I like to see where I'm going)
