Chain Contingency is insane

Messing around with an uncapped Sorcerer. The flexibility the spell gives you adds immense power to a mage. Fights that I couldn't beat before are easy now. I linked 3 abi wilting spells to the next time I see an enemy and BOOM, when it goes off nearly everything dies. The Pit Fiend is also a juggernaut of destruction and with Time Stop I can control almost any fight.
Yeah a lvl 20+ Sorcerer is definitely a bad ass.

That sounds a little bit overkill, especially if you meet a single character or a group of kobolds.
Anyway the sorcerer has some other spells/combinations (eg. project image_ which could make him way too powerful (even within the xp cap).

I chosed to forgo the project image because it would take some of the challenge away from the game.

I totally agree. And the same applies to the 9th level spells and the Magi.

Anyone noticed that, great as Chain Contingency is,it doesn't function according to it's description in the manual. It states that spells of any level can be used, yet when choosing what spells go into the Contingency, you can only go as far as level 8.I picked this spell initially, intending Timestop to be one of the Contingency spells, but changed my mind after running into this limitation.
My guess is that since mages and sorcerers, under the XP cap, can't progress to 9th level spell use, this limitation was intended by the game designers.Oh well, maybe Throne Of Bhaal will change this.

I know that in AD&D 2nd Ed., Chain Contingency only allows you to use spell levels 1-8.

LOL @ Zartuul!!
You uncapped your Sorcerer but don't use project image because you think it might take away some of the challenge!!!
Obviously your not looking for a challenge if you uncapped your PC eh?

If i recall, this is the guy soloing with a sorc, and self-capped himself at 20. Sounds fair to me. Whatever floats your boat

It is hard to know what to limit in advance to keep the challenge. For some ideas check the "hardcore rules" at: http://www.gamebanshee.com/ubb/Forum2/HTML/002733.html
Anyway, capping at level 20 is actually a hard-wired limit as in BG2 no more spell slots will be available (without level 50 rules) and the spells will not be stronger/longer.

Correct Idiyen I'm playing the sorceror solo and capped myself at 20. I think I'd be lvl 25 by now otherwise and I just escaped the asylum. Sure a lvl 20 sorceror is powerful but not as powerful as a 17 sorceror with 5 other characters at the cap.
